Description "Nicole don't do P2 Elders, but if she did; it would probably be the best P2 Elder in the world"

Sorry, could not resist quoting Carlsberg...
This is probably one of the best P2 Elders I have made, and I am happy about the result. Used a picture of a sculpted one for reference, think it was made by Murphy or something - have to come back for that.
Maybe need some more shading in the mouth area, but not sure... have to rest it for awhile and come back sometime later.
Does it need more shading?

You have such a nice gallery, you work very well with coloured pencils, something I need to train on. Do you have some tips you'd like to share?

I thought they were coloured pencils too, not just usual graphite/led.
Nice drawings either way.

This was one of the first "portraits" of a predator that I made actually. I have done more now of course and improved alot of things. The dreads in this one is not how I want them today, but back then it was trial and error and a learning experience.

CoolleKotten In reply to xenomorphic97 [2010-11-30 19:36:23 +0000 UTC]

No I dont usually sell my drawings, but I have made a trade ones with another artist and now I how a commission from one who wants me to draw his predator suit. But I dont normally take commission or so, I always end up with too little time etc. to make the drawings. But, on the other end it is always good to earn some money here and there.

Awesome work!

I tried to draw a Predator from comic book reference a while back (the line art is in my gallery) and I thought I did well to capture the level of detail - but this is truly inspirational!

You've managed to instill a lot of character and capture the design's more intricate aspects - I'm impressed.

And quite jealous!

HdE.

THANK you!

It is first when you watch a picture real close, that you get the idea of how much detail you really need to have in a picture to make it look as real as possible, or as close to the original. I stared alot on my reference picture... but I changed some things too.
The eyes were one of the hardest parts... to not make it too angry or such. Think it turned out pretty well.

Thank you for the kind words, seen your pic of the predator and it is a good start! Just need to finish it up.
And dont be jealous...

Most welcome!

I know what you mean about studying the reference material carefully - sometimes it's daunting, but it always pays to take a while and really look at the subject matter. The detail on my inked Predator wouldn't have been anywhere near the level I got it up to without a handful of decent refs. Thanks for looking that one over, by the way!

Where the Predator's eyes are concerned, I found that there's a careful balance you have to strike. The creature is supposed to be intelligent, and so you have to convey enough of a human characteristic to get that across. But the Predator is also bestial, so you have to incorporate some animal elements too. I think I did that pretty well in my pencils, but it got lost at the inking stage. I feel pretty badly about that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CoolleKotten In reply to hde2009 [2009-05-06 15:59:45 +0000 UTC]

I know what you mean about the eyes.
He is intelligent, but at the same time a beast who kills and skins people... so doing too "nice" eyes will turn the picture completly wrong, but too "evil" wont make up his character. Then he will just look mad. I did not want the Elder to look mad, so I got him more... I dont know.. not suprised, but attentive maybe? Dont know a good english word for it (Im Swedish).

Try to do a new Predator pic, and use a picture that you like and try to paint exactly like it. Change what you dont like, but keep it close to the original. Just give it a try and see what happens.

hde2009 In reply to CoolleKotten [2009-05-06 16:23:23 +0000 UTC]

You put that across really well - I know English people who don't speak English half as well as you!

I think the key point is that character art requires us to take these considerations into account. That's why it takes a lot of skill and thought to capture a character like this properly. I think we've both succeeded in that, but to different degrees.

I'm in two minds about my own sketch. I may go back to it - plenty of folks have suggested that I should! - or I may start afresh on a completely new one when time permits.

We will have to see!

It's good to have a little chat with you about this

CoolleKotten In reply to hde2009 [2009-05-07 16:01:38 +0000 UTC]

Totally agree on the character part. When you paint a well-known character you really have to make it right so noone will go "What the hell is that?" and give you stupid comments. You can change some things, but you have to keep the original at heart, otherwise you doing a completely different figure and you should be prepared for some criticism.

It is hard to go back to a drawing you left a time ago, in this case, a year. All the lines you did earlier may seem off, and then you see another thing and so on and then you just put it aside and don't do anything. So I would suggest to start a new one.
Find an interesting pose, not too hard or wierd, and then sketch it up and draw like a maniac for the rest.
We develop all the time, so don't give up if it looks wierd, just try a new one. You have to find your own style too.

Oh, so true, so true!

I've never had a problem with returning to older, unfinished work. I guess I'm just able to make my peace with whatever I've drawn before and keep things moving forward. It does get hard to maintain enthusiasm at times, though.
