Beasts of Old Avallyn: The Nokken III:I-IX

Verily, the Nokken, beings of semi-sentience, doth possess a disposition conducive to domestication. Those intrepid merchants hailing from the Merillion Lowlands, who venture nigh unto their isles, oft chance upon these creatures, bearing them unwittingly as stowaways upon their maritime sojourns. Thus on occasion, they embark upon the endeavor of instructing them in various arts and gesticulations. When adequately tutored, the Nokken may accomplish a diverse array of tasks and, in certain circumstances, even acquire proficiency in tongues.

Subsequently, they are oft vended unto Princes and Lords, destined to serve as jesters within their courts. Herein, their tresses are shorn, and they are arrayed in raiment befitting men.

Upon occasion, when a Nokken hath either absconded or been granted liberty, instead of reverting unto a wholly feral state, they retain the customs and talents they acquired. Electing instead to inhabit the swamps and forests of man's dominion, forging its own society, and bequeathing its skills unto its progeny.
