Let's imagine the story goes like this:

Eric is the prince of the sea, he loves to play the flute and explore the sea, defying his mother, the goddess of the sea into becoming the next king.
As he swim about, he hear a beautiful song, much more beautiful than his flute and he go to investigate and discover a human girl singing upon the shore. He listen to her and watch her. She sings every day, unknown that he watches her.
Then one day, she saw him... well... That's where my imagination ends.
