Description
Nordanner is a semi-realistic fantasy breed that uses real life genetics, and combines them with fantastical elements. These sheets are meant for the use of Nordanner breed only, and should not be used as examples for other breeds: while based in real life, Nordanner contains many simplifications, generalizations and other elements unique to this breed.
Roan is able to act upon all base coats. On very light coats, roan will always be nearly pure white, and may be difficult to see. The effects of roan are not removed by sooty. As dilution, roan is considered a part of the base coat, and goes under all mutations, and is able to show on mutations that limit the appearance of white markings.
To avoid issues, all roan designs should have a gradient color, meaning there should be an obvious gradient between head/legs and body. On top of this gradient, texturing may be added for a more naturalistic look. The texture may not, however, cause the horse to look like a snowflake appaloosa etc - any texture brushes used should have a pattern suitable for roans.
DOs
Try out different intensities and more uneven roaning for a more interesting look
Use light/natural looking texturing on top of the main gradient
Add corn spots for extra character
DON’Ts
Create a roan with multiple different hues of color. Roan adds white hairs - not cream ones or red ones. As such, it will not create effects like those of pangare.
Make your horse an unnatural hue. While blue roans are called blue, they are blueish grey at best, not actual bright blue.
Make patterns. Roan doesn’t cause any sort of stripes or any other markings. Uneven does not mean marked.
Just use a texture brush. The underlying gradient is mandatory for design acceptance. For art, you can do things as your style demands.
Change eye color.
