Description PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEAAAASEEE, I NEED FEEDBACK, SO IF YOU LIKE ANY OF THESE, DO COMMENT. THAT'S WHY I NUMBERED THEM (EXCLUDE NUMBERS 9, 10 AND 11). IF YOU THINK A COMBINATION OF DIFFERENT VERSIONS WOULD WORK, DO LET ME KNOW.

Tried some stuff out today. Some of this have minor changes, some others have very different styles, none of them really convinces me. I need to find myself a shading style.

1. Soft lights
2. Soft lights and deep shadows
3. Sharp lights
4. Sharp lights and deep shadows
5. Base colour
6. Base colour and deep shadows (ironically, this is probably the one i like the most of this batch)
7. Lineart
8. Hatching and deep shadows
9. "The failed Windflite" (Maybe i'll try again after watching her livestreams. I do believe i got those feet claws right)
10. "The attempted crayon-chewer"
11. "The purplekecleon-ish"
12. "The Why-Isn't-This-One-Up-There-With-The-Others"
13. Softer lineart (I need to improve my lineweight and lineart colour skills)
14. Low saturation
15. Low saturation and deep shadows

Oh and have some cartoon-ish legendary birds. I need to practice this too.

they all look awesome. how the hell did you learn so many styles? D:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ClockworkShrew In reply to Nexeron [2013-01-15 19:33:36 +0000 UTC]

It's not "learning", I was just trying out a bunch of stuff, altering shadows, changing the color of the lineart, working with a different brush, etc.

Nexeron In reply to ClockworkShrew [2013-01-15 22:52:18 +0000 UTC]

I never used other than default brushes. Do new brushes really improve the picture? Because I have no idea which brush for what good is.

ClockworkShrew In reply to Nexeron [2013-01-16 02:35:25 +0000 UTC]

I really have no idea either! I just try changing the texture, density, blend and other properties and see what works, maybe try to understand how each thing affects the brush. I'm not very theory-savvy, and I've never taken art classes so I just kind of have to try to figure stuff out on my own.

yup I also have no art classes or similar(sometimes i wish i had^^) Well, i tried to draw a picture now with this tips and it looks better than usual. hurray! thanks

Absolutely loved it. Not as big of fan of the pastel colors, but I like the black silhouette for limbs in the background particularly. 4, 6, 8, 12 & 15. Excellent work.

They're very original.

I like number 8 - it might look nice if you coloured it a bit too! Obviously there's already shading there, buut you could easily just fill in the base colours to see what it looks like :3

I also like numbers 10 and 11 a lot - but you said not to metion those

I like 4, 6, and 15. The deep shadows definitely gives it more depth, and I like the smoother tones of 15, while 4 and 6 are both nicely vibrant.

Also. Zapdos =

I think I like 2, 11 and 15 the most.
I really don't like 9. It looks like you were trying very hard to make some effect but it's not your style... like if it were forced.
Other linearts are much softer and more pleasant to look at.

I really like 12 and 13,
at first 1 was my favorite, because it seemed to really pop and the colors were very bright , but as I kept scrolling 12 and 13 caught my eye.
12 seems to be much more of a american comic style? If you know what I mean, the thick shading and using black for it I guess.
13 on the other hand is very soft, and visually appealing to me...sorry I'm not more decisive on this, they're all very nice style so it was hard to pick any of them really ^^

diamagon [2012-01-27 13:09:43 +0000 UTC]

well like every stylistic media, the asthetics have to match the story you want to tell.

and from what i have seen of your mission 4, you go for a more slower, intelectual style. kinda reminds me of how deathnote worked, it didnt actually have any actiony parts, but it did make it seem like one. i can sort of see this in the lexy "battle" that you did.
but looking at the fountain fight, it reminds me a bit of naruto with all the explaining by the other characters (which also slows down the action).

so... what i would say is probably something that looks sharp and with lotsa contrast, maybe... 15, 14, 8 and 4? well maybe without completely blacking out the leg. but this is just my opinion, hope it helps though.

1, 9, 11, 13 and 14 are my favorites
1 has very nice shadows and very saturated colors.
9 looks like it was painted with copics. Looks very nice and real
11 has very light colors. But it looks kind of colorful, like drawn with pastels
13 looks very bright and sparkly but still has a nice contrast to the saturated shadows
14 has very clean lines and the coloring not that outstanding because it is so light, but it supports the lines very well

overall: nice work man, they look all very nice!

CheesyCrocs [2012-01-27 05:24:01 +0000 UTC]

Lesse here, while I do like the first two, they remind me a little too much of the old dodge and burn technique which looks fine in small doses, but I'm not sure I could see that working in a larger scale work. I say that because I feel like the colors could get a little overwhelming and perhaps too distracting with various characters thrown in the mix as well. 3 - 6 are very nice, my favorites being the deep shadows and sharp lights along with deep shadows and base color. The latter of the two is nice and simple, but it has a good point of interest with the deep shadows, so it's not just plain base colors if you were worrying about being too simple or too flat.
I think the plain lineart could be a smiiiiidge cleaner, getting rid of those little stray lines that are pretty far off the character, but it's still very good. Then of course I already love the style in number 8. The de saturated style is a little too bland for me. I don't think it conveys the full extent of your skills as well as the other styles could.
So overall I think that any style with the deep shadows is something you're very good at and it looks great. If I had to choose favorites, I'd say the base color/deep shadows or possibly sharp lights and deep shadows. Though honestly I'm amazed if not a little envious of your ability to come up with so many coloring styles for your comic! It's very inspiring; excellent experimenting man. c:

Hope that helps a little!

5, 6, 11 and 13 are my favs, but my advice is to stick to what's easiest for you. All of them are great. Not fond of the thin lines, though; they make it less... personal? Does that make any sense?

Numbers 8 and 9 really caught my eye. I love the whole doujin style of comics, but then I love the color on 9 just because it looks like it was painted off of a canvas. And 6 as well. Love the base and shadows. Those are the ones that have gotten my attention.

1-7 look very simple, but i like that. Not too fancy.
I like 9, 10, and 11 a lot. Lots of color. Nicely done on those three. They stand out a lot.
12 is also simple, good shading. I like that too. :U
13 is also colorful. Stands out like 9-11 a lot.
I like the sketchy look of 15.

Depending on your timetable, you can go for the really detailed for an extended period of time or quick shading in a short amount of time.
2 and 4 look nice
9, 12 14, 15 look nice in shiny/snowy places

13 is really nice- its got a nice mix of both 11 and 10, which I guess would make it your own style. It just seems to stand out more with the lack of harsh black most of the others have. It's also softer and easier on the eye.
