The priory fell victim to the Dissolution of the Monasteries (1536) - basically a way of selling off property and possessions to fund Henry VIII's military campaigns.

Later, in 1648, during the Second English Civil War, the priory was caught in the crossfire between Royalist & New Model Army forces, resulting in its present ruinous state.
