Description The Delta Smelt Hypomesus transpacificus is a critically endangered fish endemic to the Sacramento/San Joaquin River delta in California.  The Delta Smelt tolerates a wide range of salinity and was historically abundant in the Sacramento/San Joaquin delta and estuary.  Water export from the delta, increased levels of agricultural run off, other contaminants, the introduction of invasive fish species (striped & largemouth bass) and artificial landscape changes led to a rapid decline of the species in the 1980's.

The Delta Smelt has been the target of controversy in California.  It received protection from the state of California as an Endangered Species in 2010, which led to restrictions on water flow/export from the delta for agriculture and cities.  Farmers accused the state of prioritizing the fish over the livelihood of people, and Delta Smelt protections did result in the loss of ~5,000 job--compared to ~16,000 jobs lost in the same time frame due to drought conditions (ewccalifornia.org/reports/Meas… ).  Since the Delta Smelt is semelparous and was once among the most numerous fish species in the state, it is considered a key indicator of water health in California.  Unfortunately, they may now be extinct in the wild due to the recent severity of California's drought.  The last survey in April 2015 found only a single fish.  They may now be extinct in the wild, but a captive breeding program exists at UC Davis, and at a Northern Californian fishery.

the fish will never be extinct it has moved from the delta science has already proved not pumping water down to southern cali has had the reverse effect of protecting this fish. dont believe me look on youtube delta fishing videos, you will see the big predators that overfilling the delta has led to. and science has also proven the delta smelt will only increase in population in the delta when it rains in the delta. the fishes eggs have actually been pumped south of the delta and people caught them in record sizes south of  the delta. its all politics. but there is no drought in california and if there is one it has never changed. we built the aqueduct system because southern california has and always will be a desert. the funny thing about the drought propaganda is on one hand they show castaic lake a lake that has been put on the lowest end of recieving water in the state and the propaganda machine uses it in commercials to claim drought. then on youtube you can see the california delta overfilling with water.. go figure.  stop the aqueduct thats meant to ship water down south and you can create a false drought situation on the lower half of the state.  i would go so far as to even say good ol texas billionaires have a hand in this. not only did they stop water from where the next world record largemouth bass was about to  be caught(19.3 oz in 2011) they stopped the trout plants too and tried to lower the water in both lakes here so low that it would kill all our hogs. so that thier multibillion$ dream of farm raising the next world record largemouth bass in a farm environment to create income for thier state can come true. yet the judges relied on junk science to stop the water flow for this delta smelt which is one of the lowest forms of food on the chain  and the salmon thats almost been commercially fished off the face of the earth. yet when real science proved what they are doing is a joke and doing the complete opposite, they still uphold the water ban.. why .. hmm think about that. and the point at the very end of your info is the exact truth the fish cant be extinct when we have them farmed up and a healthy stock of them even though there are a lot of them alive south of the delta. wow who would think fish that know its on the bottom of the food chain make their nests by pumps to pump their eggs down river away from all the monster predators in the delta... if judges or any of these idiots claiming they know anything about animals would take a minute to understand a animal doesnt always live in one place forever. in fact animals adapt faster then humans. but it wasnt just jobs that were lost because of the stopping of the pumping of water. lots of food wont be grown because there is less and less water to go around this move has influence from all over the place from billionaires. it will strip the small farmers from water allowing big farmers to take over all land who are probably enslaved by certain big corps or govt. which means also less food for the rest of america. this move effects up to millions of people since food grown in california goes to almost every state. another fun fact around 80% of water in california is used to grow food the other 20% is used by the people who live here. so by stopping all that water 80% of that water would be used for food. only 20% of that water would be used by the people who live in all the areas under the delta.
