Description Kiya's econd adult challenge for Windsonde.

"You are attending a midnight festival in Twistoult to honor the goddess Mordachae. Even though you may not believe in any of it, the Queen has instructed you and your fellows to make nice as a way of improving relations. Show yourself participating in a ritual, or looking down at the superstitious Twistoult ninnies."

Having just finished a nighttime challenge for my other gryph, Valcaur, I decided not to draw something at night again. So here is Kiya, with Equinox, Beyzai, Alanis, Eira, Gideon, Jhator and Coutil, waiting for midnight in the cold inland mountains that create the border between Twistoult's lush forests and Grandesque's deserts. They are there for a joint ceremony honoring Toldine during the day, and Mordachae once dusk falls.

Kiya isn't used to such frigid weather, but is delighted by her first experience with snow. Poor freezing Gideon is huddled under a nanulak pelt, and he is generous enough to share it with Kiya. Bey is also hunched down to conserve her body heat. Equinox and Eira, on the other hand, look more than comfortable in the frosty temperature!

Kiya [link] is my character.
Bey [link] belongs to =Jerepasaurus
Equinox [link] belongs to *windfalcon
Eira [link] belongs to ~Obany
Alanis [link] belongs to ~CirrusTheCloud
Gideon [link] belongs to ~Cyaneus
Jhator [link] belongs to =SageGoat
Cotuil [link] belongs to ~nashoba-hostina

This was my first time trying to do snow or fire. Critique is appreciated.

Kiya's final adult challenge will feature a nasty skirmish between Grandesque and Skrekrill. If anyone's character would like to participate (no one will be depicted being seriously injured), I'll take the first three Grandesque and the first three Skrekrill that indicate in the comments they want to be featured; please mention whether you would like your character drawn as a young gryphon or adult if they're not already an adult.

Edit: I've got my participants, thanks guys.

Great group scean. Love the individual expression and information provided below. the character names are also great! (of course each person is resposible for their own names...) anyway love the entire piece! Looks like a nice group of friends (some closer than others) having a good time.

How long does a piece like this take? I continue to be impressed with how many pieces you submit, but not only that, but pieces of quality, and often with many characters involved! I think it would take me MONTHS to complete something this detailed, and with so many personalities! You have a real skill for incorporating a lot of bodies into one piece without it getting overcrowded or too busy.

Gideon is adorable in his freezing-ness.

It depends on how complex the background is--rocks and water don't take too long, but vegetation and tricky lighting do. Feathers don't take me long (anymore) but I still don't have a quick technique for fur. This particular piece took about 28 hours (snow and mountainscape were new drawing experiences). My Skrekrill gryphlets, on the other hand, took less than 16 hours. I use a huge canvas and if you were able to view this at 100% zoom, you would see that it is very loose and scribbly--that's why they don't take too long. My first Windsonde painting (Kiya's waterfall challenge) took forever, but it was a smaller canvas and I spent so much time trying to get every detail perfect. I think it's one of my higher quality Windsonde pictures, but it took at least 4x the length of this one to complete, with less than 4x the quality (in my opinion), so I started pushing this technique more.

Speaking of that, how you manage to do all this amazing detail and still retain yours is a mystery to me. Your work is always so fine and textured and wonderful. Everything turned out great, ranging from that beautiful, glowey fire, to the snow in the mountains, to the feathers... bravo, man, bravo!

And, thank you again, so much for including Cotuil. It's so kind of ya to have her in this.

I would love it! He's at awkward teenager stage right now (skin making the transition from green to orange) so you can either draw him like that (I'll be uploading his second challenge soon, but essentially he's still got his dark juvenile plumage with some of the adult coloration coming in on the chest, and his skin is an ugly combo of mottled brownish red/olive green) or adult--unless you've already started and/or really want to draw young Valcaur.

augh! it always takes my breath away whenever you post something, because the amount of detail and just...amazing technical focus is STUNNING. Your style looks so much like a really great colored pencil or oil pastel drawing, it's almost unbelievable that this is digital! I love when your pieces pop up in my inbox. The colors shading and detail are all superb and done so well! The only thing I would try reccomending if anything, is to try and integrate the characters with the background. They dont really look like they are in snow. I could take them out and put them on a beach. But this was a joy to look at and I cant wait to see the next one you put out!!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Ciameth In reply to SophieDragon [2011-01-05 16:33:48 +0000 UTC]

Good point. Integrating background and subject is one of the things I struggle the most with. I feel like if I get better at lighting, that aspect of my work will also improve. I'm trying a new approach in another painting I'm working on, where I'm essentially working straight from one of my own ref photos for the background and mentally replacing the subject that was in the photo with a fantasy subject in the painting, trying to get the lighting on the figures the same. But that wouldn't be practical for every composition. Is there any one thing that stands out to you as indicating these characters aren't part of the background? Is it the lighting, or is there something else I need to focus on too? I really appreciate your critique.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SophieDragon In reply to Ciameth [2011-01-05 16:48:07 +0000 UTC]

Its not the lighting so much as they arent interacting with the background. The gryphone laying in the snow just seems to be put on top of it. I would say maybe having the snow shaded and even lumped around his arm and paws. Same with the other gryphons, they all look just set on top of the snow. Snow gets lumpy and parts of your feet sink into it. I think simply adding clumps of snow and a little shadowing will bring them all together. Maybe even a little bit of white snow collecting on their ears or heads. Its hard to integrate characters with their backgrounds and I struggle with it alot too. But the idea of looking at an existing background sounds like a good idea to start with

Ciameth In reply to SophieDragon [2011-01-05 17:37:12 +0000 UTC]

Got all my Grandesques now. I'm so used to seeing Tiberius as part of the Poofia that it's hard to imagine how he'd be as an (actually) intimidating adult gryphon Would he be the sort of fighter to make himself look ginormous with a tough posture (like most owls), or would he be the sort of bird to drop convention (as far as raptor fights go) and dive right in to cause damage?

Hourah! Thank you!!

OWLS have weird faces period.

Also, your snow and your fire are BANG ON. I would love to be the fly on your shoulder as you draw these. I honestly do not know how you put so much detail in there, get the colours and shading just right, all without any lineart...

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Ciameth In reply to rydicanubis [2011-01-05 06:17:28 +0000 UTC]

Lineart is actually something I struggle with. I want to be able to do celshaded-style-type pictures, but so far they've all turned out like crap. I think it's because it's something I've never practiced, whereas in Painter I use mostly the oil pastel tool in the exact same way I've used real oil pastels since I was a kid.

I was thinking about doing a rock tutorial after posting a poll to see if anyone would interested. I'm far from a painting expert or anything, but I love doing rocks and I've refined the way I do them to the point where I don't need to follow a ref and I can bang them out really fast. The fire, however, was heavily referenced from some old Girl Scout campfire photos!

rydicanubis In reply to Ciameth [2011-01-05 06:18:50 +0000 UTC]

The rocks yes, but for me even more so just the way you do the gryphons themselves. It astounds me, how GOOD they look. You have a brilliant mix of realism and yet injecting plenty of character into them.

(I shall peer veerrry veeerrry veeeerry closely at your arts and try to emulate 'Ciameth style')

I'm still trying to get better at the technical aspects of the feather and fur, honestly, and have been looking closely at other peoples' arts to see what techniques they use. My parents have also promised to get my James Gurney's Color & Light book for my upcoming birthday, so I'm very excited about studying that, since he's my favorite artist and his blog is so educational. I love it when people post WIPs he, so I'm screencapping Valcaur's second challenge piece as I go; I plan to post it in my scraps when I'm done.
