Description
These mounds, known as 'mottes' were built under the instructions of local Norman lords after the conquest of England in 1066. In this area, on the border on England and Wales, these mottes served as strongholds from which Norman overlords could view their lands and ride out to deal with troublesome locals! The mottes were almost certainly built by locals forced by the Normans.
