Description New Commission piece. I'd never done a Deathlok before, so I was happy to do this one. This is based on the original Rich Buckler design, though I didn't get it quite right. The Cap was the clients idea. I think a lot of people remember the Cap stories with Deathlok and the awesome-ness of Mike Zeck.

Good work. Someone already did the Disney gag? Dammit! I was going to suggest you stick some ears on it, or something. Maybe they will be less strict about heroes wearing pants etc etc. But if someone already DID the Disney joke...!

I think you're going to want to change that to "Copyright Disney."

On a more related note, it's a great picture.

Deathlok! Pure grooviness, my man. Your ability to render that metallic chrome finish is absolutely crazy. U almost had me going out and buying a set of copics! LOL! Rock on, homie.

Thanks! Bit of white paint on the metal bits too. The figure is all Prisma as is the Cap head, but the rest is Copics.

Simply F'ing gorgeous! Those issues are where I too first discovered Deathlok. Having never used Copic or Prismas (yeah I'm a sinner) I'm unfamiliar with how they blend etc... how do you manage to seem to have a dry-brshing texture where some of the darker greys go lighter? (Ex: below his left knee cap, coming up to his bicep, etc)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristopherStevens In reply to Grimwolf13 [2009-08-30 02:30:07 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Well, not real sure what you're referring to. Markers have a nature dither (dark to light effect)if you do quick strokes with them. You might be seeing the strokes on the black or dark grey marker as I flick it.

Very sharp and an interesting take. These marker illos are always so stunning and well done. The only thing I'd like to see in these at times would be a flat stark black where it's needed. For that possibly trying laying down black acrylic paint rather than ink or marker. Something I've tried as of recent and it works quite well.

BTW, who's the client, a CAF member I'd know?

ChristopherStevens In reply to WadeFurlong [2009-08-29 22:59:42 +0000 UTC]

I use black on these, but I like having some grey in there too. Just an artistic choice.

This was for my mate, Gerry Turnbull.

WadeFurlong In reply to ChristopherStevens [2009-08-29 23:21:29 +0000 UTC]

All cool, artistic choice and pref. I just noticed in this one like the black BG, (this is just me) there are alot of visible mark making strokes. To me sometimes that leaves it seeming inconsist if the marks aren't made to describe some sort of fluid design nuance in the choices of the strokes made. Just a critique, please don't take offense.

Thanks, Gerry Turnbull, I'll look him up. I always love seeing new collections.

CheerZ bud, and keep up the killer work, you inspire, you rule fo sho!

this is another banger! Do you just draw something really lightly and then go over it with the Copics? How is your process? teach me, please! =]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristopherStevens In reply to thelearningcurv [2009-08-29 22:58:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's a light pencil drawing underneath. I still do all my figures with Prismas, but most of the backgrounds are Copics.

thelearningcurv In reply to ChristopherStevens [2009-08-30 02:00:11 +0000 UTC]

whats the difference between the copics and the prismas?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristopherStevens In reply to thelearningcurv [2009-08-30 02:28:08 +0000 UTC]

Not much really, but the Copics have a slightly more mottled finish. The wide tip of the Copic is a bit harder to detail with also which is why I still use Prismas on the figures.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thelearningcurv In reply to ChristopherStevens [2009-08-30 02:36:57 +0000 UTC]

don't the copics have a detailed smallre tip on the opposite side of the marker? and by the way, what is mottled mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristopherStevens In reply to thelearningcurv [2009-08-30 07:38:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they both have a "fine" tip, but I rarely use them. All the detailing you see on my figures was done with the wide tip of the Prismas. The wide tip of the Copic is a bit more blunt and harder to work into the nooks and crannies...so to speak

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

thelearningcurv In reply to ChristopherStevens [2009-08-30 07:42:06 +0000 UTC]

why no desire to use the fine tip?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ChristopherStevens In reply to thelearningcurv [2009-08-30 21:37:32 +0000 UTC]

Mostly it's just too small for most things. Plus, I tend to get better results from the wide tip since I can control the strokes and get natural dithers.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

thelearningcurv In reply to ChristopherStevens [2009-08-30 21:49:57 +0000 UTC]

that works, makes sense=] thanks a lot=]

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

ChristopherStevens In reply to ChristopherStevens [2009-08-30 07:40:25 +0000 UTC]

Forgot to add..mottled is just a slightly grainy look. The Copic ink dries with a spotty-splotchy look. It's pretty subtle, but definitely not as nice as the Prismas.
