Description My first real attempt at a planetary animation (taken at the same time as the animation of Jupiter's moons found in my scraps [link] ). It turned out a lot better than I thought it would. It is made up of 13 frames taken during a two hour observing session during which the great red spot was visible, along with a moon and its shadow. The usual problem of the egg shaped images has occurred, and is mostly visible at the end of the animation as I had to keep the general proportions of the planet the same. I know how to generally fix this problem (its related to how I track the planets) and I will make an attempt to fix this. Anyway, enjoy it as it is.

EDIT (27-07-2007): I have updated the animation. I was quite bored today and I happened across the old frames of this animation. I decided I could improve upon their alignment and spent some time fixing them up. I also decided to add a 'reverse' movement so the animation would look more fluent. It still appears to jump around a bit - this is due to the fact that each frame came out slightly egg-shaped (as do most/all of my images) and it is quite hard to skew/re-size all the frames exactly the same. I did the best with what I had to work with. I think another Jupiter animation might be on the cards if I can put up with the cold sometime in the coming weeks.

Apparently you have to click the "Download" button to the left.

Enjoy!

Taken with 10" F5 Newtonian on Dobsonian base, captured with Panasonic mini DV video camera held to telescope with home made camera bracket. WinDV used to capture footage as AVI, Registax used to process. Each frame was aligned in photoshop and formed into an animation using animator9.

"Jupiter" ..Our solar system's giant vacuum cleaner...without whom, Earth would've been struck more often with giant astroids.

Not bad...It moved quite a lot in just two hours, which only reminds of how fast it must be rotating when you consider the fact that very lage and distant objects always seem to be in slow-motion, that moon must be going at an incredible speed.

That's not half bad. The only thing that I would mention is the minor shaking in your telescope, which resulted in the image moving slightly around the center of the frame. Other than that, wonderfully well done.

i think the moving around makes it better. but that's not the pointΒ Β

What do you mean by bw? Black and white?

nonameface24 In reply to Chrissyo [2006-04-25 17:29:50 +0000 UTC]

yeah

Chrissyo In reply to nonameface24 [2006-04-26 06:33:54 +0000 UTC]

Well its not actually in black and white, thats how each frame looked after comming out of registax. My camera has a tendency to give sort of bland looking pictures. Normally I touch up the contrast etc in photoshop which brings out the colour more, but to keep each frame uniform to each other, I didn't do it for this animation. So its not in black and white, but its still pretty bland.

Really great man! What is the black spot in the NEB? It's best visible in the last frame but ist seems to be there in all the other frames too.

I have no idea what that black spot is. I didnt even notice it until after you mentioned it. Might look into it

I'be never seen a shadow on jupiter, must see it once though! Great animation - may I use this animation for lessons at our local observatory?

Chrissyo In reply to Kokone [2006-04-23 11:53:00 +0000 UTC]

I quite like the shadow transits, they just look cool, and if you keep checking the planet for some time, you can tell its moving and get a sense of the dynamic system it is. Yeah, you can use the animation for lessons if you want

These eclipses happen quite often, there is a good chance that you will see one. Just inform yourself about the exact date and time.
