Description A scene from part one of my Hi Ho Hyperdrive story Outlawed.  Rover turned his back on the wrong person.
Outlawed: part 1

Dust stirred and swirled with the hum of displaced air as the small shuttle deployed its landing struts and lowered itself onto one of the many the brightly colored docking pads that sprouted from the sides of the tall cylindrical building.  The little bronze colored vessel settled itself onto the flat surface.  As its engines powered down and the dust settled an emblem could be seen on its side--a small feathered arrow underlining the word ‘Tonto’.
There was a metallic complaint of under-oiled hinges as a hatch in the belly of the Tonto slid open and a ramp unfolded.  Before the walkway had even touched the ground a pair of well-worn cowboy boots, complete with polished spurs and buckles, hit the colorful turf of the docking platform.
Rover Finnigan was tall with broad shoulders and an eager smile.  There was a soft clicking whir as his left arm, a co

I've had this comic page sketched for eons.  Finally decided to ink it.  I thought about coloring it but I think I like it in black and white.  I really REALLY want to do an entire story in comic book form.  But it takes me FOREVER to hit on a layout I like.  Gotta practice.

(Rover Finnigan and Hi HO Hyperdrive belong to me)

Thanks!  At first I was going to color it.  But I really liked it just inked.

Thank you very much!

I would love to do that.  And I'll do some when I can.

Ornus is quite the coward, distracting Rover so he would turn his back.

He'll survive. But the poor guy does wake up in prison with a supernova of a headache.

Heh. Without Flyspur he gets into situations like this. He really needs that little guy there to reign him in sometimes.

THIS IS SOOOOOO COOOOOL!!!!  You've got to do a comic!!!

The inking you did on this is so very good! Reminds me of Clavin and Hobs!

I want to sooo bad!!!  It's like, inside me, dying to come out!  My lack of experience in panel layout and backgrounds makes me hesitate....

Calvin and Hobbes????  REALLY?  That is my favorite comic strip EVER!!

It just takes practice. This page here that you have is perfect!

I always start with a swirl that flows from right to left and down the page to follow the general form. Then I kind of make odd shapes here and there and then imagine where the characters would fit into those shapes.  Drawing small sketches of the entire page in rough form also makes it easier.

Haha! Mine too!

I'll have to try that. See if it works. Need to do more loose sketching. I start with the face too often and then guild the rest of the pic around that. Not very conductive to planning background and poses.

That does not surprise me. Peggy's got some Spaceman Spiff in her.

Good job. I did a comic a while ago and they're great for practice. I think the trick is to accept that it will never be as good as your normal art and just keep working at it.
Also, I remember your story mentioned that some of the tranquilizers used on that planet were toxic to humans. In my story, alcohol is a good thing if you want to get a Torf sleepy. (They don't get drunk, they just sleep.) It's fun figuring out how different critters' biologies work.

I always admire people who can make complete comic books.  It's HARD.

Yes.  Two are fine.  But one of them as cyanide in it.
Heh...I'll remember that.

No kidding. Basically, every panel is its own picture, and then you're generally doing it from perspectives you're not used to.

I could see Nana trying to use it on some Torf that needed a nap.

Oh nice, a comic! I guess there's only one thing I don't understand: that bubble in the upper right?
You did a fantastic job. It would be absolutely cool to see the whole story in comic form! But I'm sure it would be draining. What about digitally? Never tried myself.

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-04-18 02:08:11 +0000 UTC]

You mean the upper left?  The right is a speech bubble.

Thanks!!  My two biggest problems are backgrounds and the comic layouts.  Sci fi requires awesome backgrounds or it's just not as fun.  And I really have to work on the panel layouts.  I'm not very familier with them.

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-04-18 02:26:02 +0000 UTC]

Oops, My bad, LOL!! Man, if I can't make that bubble out, I must be in bad shape! Yes, I meant upper left. What is that?

Don't know much about comics, but I guess that is true about backgrounds. I wouldn't have any idea for that either. I suppose figuring panels out would be harder then I'd imagine too. But you pulled this one off well! I like the way the one on the side is leaning with Rover's fall.XD Cool.
Wait did you just fix is collar? I thought that panel was kinda overlapping id a sec ago. Lol

It's supposed to be the flying dart.  But I guess I could try and make that a little clearer.

It's just another one of the many things I need to practice.

Thanks!  I was kind of proud of that.  I think I saw it done like that once in a Calvin and Hobbes strip.

Wow!   You are observant.

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-04-18 02:57:35 +0000 UTC]

OK, That's kinda what I was thinking it might be. Maybe if it were box over Rover's shoulder, the lower >left> (right ) corner hidden behind his arm? Idk, but it looks good anyway, not that could do any better by any means.

Practice is the best thing to do in anything. And the biggest thing I need to do in many things too.

Well it's a neat, creative idea!

Sometimes I am, but I think that was just something I happened to look at before.
