Description This is a test render to show the skin shader I designed for this model. It uses a subsurface light scattering node to simulate semi-translucent material such as skin and flesh.

The shot is also a means of showcasing the anatomy work I did on the character, the initial pass of the model was a bit broader and muscular but was toned down after several review sessions with the client.

Well, this almost looks like a Crocodilian, from one of my lil' book, on Brian Miller...there are three of them, currently. For me, I'm writing a series of books, and it's very, very hard to find patrons. In fact, I'm just not trying, I've got 100 pages writing on Book III. I think they are very good--and this looks like a Crocodilian that I've mentioned there. Maybe this could be Zaafielian, pictured here...I've got to discern WHAT an Alligator and a Crocodile really look like. In sum, I definitely like this saurian...it's unique, powerful, sinewy, strapping, toned, and, almost has a certain lustihood attached. Thank you! VR, JMB www.jmbrower.com

Ah, sorry about that. This was posted 3 years ago and I changed web hosts since then, so the turntable isn't online anymore. I'll see if I can dig it up and put it online again soon.

I used zbrush for most of the modeling and sculpting. Then I took it into maya for rendering and lighting. Thanks for the comments. =]

Well, they offer a free variant of Zbrush called Sculptris. If you're interested in digital sculpting, that program would be a great way to get started. =] Here's a link: [link]

Really cool render! I think the legs could do with a little more refinement but as it was client work, if they were happy then I suppose it doesn't matter so much hahah. Nice job nonetheless

chemb0t In reply to Koshizuu [2010-05-17 10:42:38 +0000 UTC]

Heheh yes indeed. The legs were actually more of a work-around than a pre-planned setup so it didn't get as much attention as the rest of the body. The client liked how it turned out though, so its all good. XD Thanks for the comments!

Aww that's a shame, but still it looks impressive even if you didn't work on it as much as the rest. I've tried Zbrush before so I know how time-consuming it can be to render such things! And no problem hahah

Thank you. I'm actually utilizing a normal and displacement map to get those textures in so its a little more detailed than just bump mapping in case you're wondering. =]

I'm not sure about having five toes on a reptilian (three is often best), but otherwise this an absolutely amazing render! The scale textures are wonderful, and I like his anthropomorphic head with forward-looking eyes and a brow, but authentic croc jaws.

chemb0t In reply to RestrainedRaptor [2010-05-17 10:40:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comment. We wanted to aim for a more realistic feel for the 3d version of this character so we decided to go with the natural 5 toes as mentioned by W4U. I'm glad the head works well for you. ^^

RestrainedRaptor In reply to chemb0t [2010-05-17 22:42:02 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, after looking again, I think it was the right decision. I'm so used to seeing raptors, having 3 major toes and a minor one, so it's quite a difference!

Is there a 360 version of this one too?

actually most reptiles do naturally have five toes

RestrainedRaptor In reply to PolygonBird [2010-05-15 06:18:56 +0000 UTC]

Well I guess that's true with most of the species I know... Although some of them have webbed feet and not huge toe claws like this guy. Anyway, it's a personal opinion. I guess I have my head too deep in fantasy, where nearly every anthro dragon has three toes. ^..^'

A nice set of renders you have~ I'll put my two cents here though.

Overall, it's a really solid model, my two favorite features being the head and the hands. I also love the folds and creases put on the clothes~

However one thing that kind of puts me off (and this is just sheer personal taste), but it would be the legs. I like the idea for the toes though.

But having seen the concepts you were given, I think it would've been better if you had stayed with the more plantigrade than the digit-grade styled anatomy. Or at least made it a bit less extreme.

As heavily built on top as the character looks, at first glance they don't seem as capable of carrying the weight of the character (regardless if you would be animating them). The thighs sport the muscle for the proportions, and the calves seem stable too.

But the feet seem a bit too skinny of a build. I would suggest, if you wanted to keep the digit-grade anatomy, to lengthen the calf and shorten as well as broaden the foot (except for the fore foot with the toes, that seems pretty stable there).

Again- a really nice model with a very nice texture and shading~

chemb0t In reply to BlazeTBW [2010-05-17 10:36:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the comments, BlazeTBW =] I'm glad that most of the body portrays the correct weight and balance. In regards to the legs, yes I definitely see what you mean. The digit-grade setup was actually put in before the concept art was even considered.

I had a base mesh which I mostly adapted to the artist's specifications. Basically we agreed to keep it as is and change things just slightly. I'll definitely keep the suggestion about larger feet in mind for future sculpts. Thanks for the feedback! =]

No worries~

And that's understandable when working with a client, better to give them what they want so that they're at least happy with the result.

Lookin' forward to your future works!
