Welcome to DayZ Rule Guide!Rule 3!
Always Prone!
If you had...I don't know...3 or 2 bullets left on your rifle or pistol and you got like 10 or 20 zombies in the road or town (forests & docks). PLEASE! Don't waste your bullets! It's NOT worth it. I mean zombies can HEAR and SEE and they are fast. If you try running pass them they can still SEE and HEAR you and chase you like NON-STOP. Prone is a very good option to pass them because, it helps you to be really stealth (Same with bandits too xP ) but, if you get close to them while you're in prone then you are DEAD and lose all of your stuff. So it will be best to not get really close to them as possible.
So remember Rule 3!

one of my rules
NEVER turn on a flashlight during the night
especially if your in a city cuz these are considered places where
bandits or players camp out
the flashlight will only serve as a beacon
announcing "Hey I'm a n00b come kill me!!"

I like prone postitin, but sometimes i worry about it in first person

prone is worse because a sniper will get an easy shot and you can just crouch walk/run into the nearest building and find a melee weapon

Rule 4: SLB (Sometimes Look Behind)
From time to time, after reaching certain places, houses, markets, crash sites etc. or after you've completed an objective, look behind you for possible stalkers. Always choose a place where items, weapons & gears usually spawn, go & stay in there for 5-7 minutes and observe the path where you've come from but remain concealed. You may have the surprise of one stalker or more to arrive, waiting for the perfect moment to kill you for the stuff you've got along the way.
This kind of situation happened to me two times: the first one I'm not so certain about -some complications happened- and in the other, I had a stalker. I've managed to counter-ambush, interrogate and shoot him. Rule #1, even if you beg for your life. Ha Ha!

I do it all the time. I've ran in to many players in the forest I could have easily downed because they were just holding W and not paying attention.

I think the thing is to get yourself into a long narrow tunnel or something so that the zombies follow you in almost a straight line. Run fast ahead and when you have enough of a lead, turn around and shoot. That way the zombies are lined up for easy pickings with a single rifle shot! Or a few well-placed pistol rounds.

that doesnt work. Even while prone zombies detect you, simply take care youΒ΄re not in their line of sight.

Are you sure you weren't really close to the zombie(like 3 or 4 feet) while prone? Zombies never detect me while I was like 15 or 25 feet away from them.

you should make a rule 4: bushes are your friend. i just run around (not caring about zombies seeing/hearing me) collect a bunch of zombies and head for the nearest group of big bushes (or pine trees) and run through them, always losing the zombies. works everytime.
