Description    The Collapse of the Russian Federation would prove to be one the 21st century's most pivotal moments. Migration, ethnic violence, intervention, and uprisings animated the former Soviet Union, redefining the borders and alliances of the region. Though Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine would prove to be the proximate cause of the collapse, the origins of the disaster can be traced back to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The over centralization of Russia's "sovereign democracy" coupled with the economic malaise that defined the post-Soviet era to create the house of cards that was 21st century Russia. Further exasperating this, the Collapse of the Soviet Union left a deep demographic scar in Russia. A declining working-age population, the result of low birth rates, combined with a decades-long brain drain to leave Putin's Russian Federation effectively braindead.

It was in this atmosphere that Russia embarked on its quagmire in Ukraine. Hundreds of thousands of young Russians were sent to their deaths, while inter-ethnic relations grew increasingly tense. The regime drew from the isolated and subjugated minority regions to inform its military, sparking resentment. Military failures highlighted to the entire world the incompetence and weakness of modern Russia, while economic sanctions increasingly decoupled Russia from the globalized economy. A paper tiger, the Federation stood little chance. Unable to achieve the subjugation and annexation of Ukraine, Putin was forced to follow his "partial mobilization" with full-scale mandatory conscription. This proved the final straw, shattering the implicit compromise between the populous and state. As conscription riots spread across the Federation pro-democracy forces became increasingly powerful. Confidence in Putin dissolved quickly, culminating in a palace coup by the remaining Siloviki. Despite the removal of Putin, minor portions of the Siloviki remained loyal to him, preventing his arrest as he fled. Thus began the Second Russian Civil War as Putinists and Putchists took up arms against each other. To further exasperate the violence, the anti-conscription movement spilled over into an overt pro-democracy uprising. The developing three-sided civil war created a power vacuum that would see the emergence of a cadre of new states while Russian authority disintegrated.

Following several weeks of fighting, NATO announced Operation Spring Peace, directly intervening in the conflict on the side of the democratic rebels. China, too, would quietly intervene in the Far East. Ironically, Russia's collapse provided for a détente between China and the West as both sought to secure Russia's nuclear weapons stockpile, contain the violence, and prevent the emergence of terrorist cells. Special forces operations succeeded in capturing many nuclear weapons, while cyber operations disabled many more. Despite these efforts, the China-NATO coalition would fail in nearly all aspects. As NATO pushed in the west and China in the east, Putin's government made its final collapse. In the confusion, many Putinists entered into a united front with the remaining Siloviki. This culminated with the establishment of an exiled remnant state in Siberia. Initially a shaky junta composed of oligarchs and military leaders, the Emergency Regime enforced its rule through strict repression and ensured their independence by securing control over nearly 1000 nuclear weapons from the Russian Federation's stockpile.

The 2030's would prove revolutionary for the Central Siberian state as Eurasianists slowly pushed the remaining oligarchs and generals out of the junta. This transformed the state, and the State of Eurasia was declared by 2038. Largely considered the greatest threat to world peace, the Eurasian State rules with an iron fist in Siberia. A rogue state, the nation is governed under a quasi-fascistic Eurasianist government hellbent on the establishment of a Eurasian state to match the borders of the former Soviet Union, and with influence over eastern Europe and the Middle east. As an ideology, Eurasianism states that geography shapes human behavior and culture. Eurasianists consider the peoples that inhabit the former USSR to be a separate civilization from the West and reject Western democracy and culture outright. Eurasianists consider the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russian Federation as a violation of the "natural unity" of Eurasian civilization. Significantly informed by Eastern Orthodox Christianity, Eurasian governance can be understood as a dualist union of theocracy and hybrid democracy.

Having reestablished the Russian Imperial Okhrana from the remnants of the FSB and GRU, Eurasia wields its intelligence service like a knife. Adept in infiltration, information warfare, and industrial espionage, the long arms of the secretive Okhrana reach into the majority of the former Russian states. Through manipulation campaigns, extortion, and deep-cover agents, the Okhrana stirs pro-Eurasianist sentiment, seeking the overthrow of governments and creation of a Eurasian polity. Many legislatures and several heads of state are considered to be captured by the Okhrana, though the true extent of the Okhrana is unknown.

For now, Eurasia remains tucked away in Siberia, though rumblings of a "Day of Reckoning" keep the world on edge. Protected by it's nuclear umbrella and captured states, it is unlikely that the Eurasian State will fall any time soon. In the rest of the world, foreign policy strategists and military planners toil away planning for the inevitable conflict. Little news escapes the blackhole that is Eurasia and their military capabilities remain largely unknown. What is known is simple: They are coming.
