Description
Well, this is a couple of things. First, it's my first attempt in a long time to draw a figure without a reference picture--for most of my picture I trace the general outline of a picture to get the figure and then alter and expand on it, but I don't habitually sit down and just draw figures because I have big issues with proportion. There was a lot of 'hey Rachel, c'mere and stick your arm out like this' and 'Melody, do your hand like this for a minute', and I did flip through some scenes from Tsuiokuhen and Seishohen looking at kimono sleeves, but there was no actual reference picture, and it's still mostly proportionate. Go me.

Second, it's my attempt to combine a kimono and a Western gown. I love the kimono, and my favorite feature is the sleeve, so I tried to take that aspect and combine it with a different silhouette (traditional kimonos have a very straight silhouette because of the obi, which eliminates the curve between hip and chest) and a sweeping skirt. The idea of replacing the obi with a corset/bodice comes from Yosa.com's Cyper Geisha designs (check out her site--she designs amazing historical and fantasy gowns).

This was also my first time using my Prismacolors, and I'm really glad that our crazy scanner didn't eat all of the color (our scanner hates color and hates shading and habitually eats both--good think I mostly do ink). Also, I think this would make a fabulous wedding dress, done in a white or cream silk brocade.
