Description Hammers. Had a lot of help with these, but these are the hammers I worked on at the workshop I did this summer.

Top one is a Japanese style hammer. It probably should have been more top heavy, but the basic working mechanics of it should remain the same. I'll probably make another one of these on my own that's more top heavy and tapers down rather than flares out at some point.

Bottom one is my new general forging hammer. The face and peen came out a bit crooked, but the hole was also a bit crooked in the other direction so it almost evened itself out before grinding the face.

Both are somewhere around 2.25lbs. He over calculates due to loss, but both these hammers lost almost little weight so they didn't actually get down to the 2lb weight we aimed for. I'm fine with their weight. They're about half a pound heavier than my first hammer (800g, which I think is 1.7lbs or something). I've gotten a lot stronger and my swing is better, so I can handle a heavier hammer now.

I need to re-sand the handles down and put something on them. I'll probably try Linseed oil out first and see how that is. My first hammer was laquered and that made it very smooth and it moved freely in my hand while swinging. These kind of grab my skin and I nearly ended up with blisters before I started wearing band-aids on my fingers to cut the friction, which never happened with my lacquered handle. So if sanding and linseed don't work, they're getting a clear coat.
