Description Megalochelys is the original and valid name for what has often been called Colossochelys. Megalochelys atlas is the largest known member of Testudinidae, with a shell length of about 2.1 m (6.9 ft), an estimated total length of 2.5 to 2.7 m (8.2 to 8.9 ft), and an approximate total height of 1.8 m (5.9 ft). weights based on volumetric displacement of the skeleton, or inferences based on two-dimensional skeletal drawings, indicate that M. atlas was probably closer to 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) – 952 kg (2,099 lb) in mass. M. atlas is thus the largest known land tortoise.

During the dry glacial periods it ranged from western India and Pakistan (possibly even as far west as southern and eastern Europe) to as far east as Sulawesi and Timor in Indonesia. It is estimated to have lived from the Miocene up until its extinction, 10000 BC.

Their is also the likely hood of their being 2-3 metric ton individuals, with a preprint that even suggest the existence of one with a shell length of 2.7 meters! If you have time I def. think you should check this site out reptilis.net/2016/05/08/t-u-r-…

I'm not sure. I'll research later what caused it to go extinct.

It lived that recently?

There are many tortoise species wiped out by humans, but this might be yet one more.

Well, it isn't clear if it was wiped out by human activity, though I was surprised when I found out how recent this animal whent extinct.

It's a good pet when it comes to animals that survived that recently.

Also humans killed off most recently extinct giant tortoises so why not this one?
