It do look very Van Goghish. What's your process? Pure copying or some study of how he wielded the paint, or knowledge of what he did physically to produce his effects?

A little of both.

Mostly its copying because of the class. However I have some books on technique at home and one of the artists they discuss is Van Gogh.

Do you recall if he painted predminantly with a pallet knife or not? His work looks that way to me.

Hi John

Mostly he was a brush guy. Occasionally he squirted paint directly out of the tube or used a stiff brush.

He frequently came back to his paintings after they were dry and painted over things he didn't care for or sometimes even painted completely new things into the composition.

I did not find any examples of him using a knife.

Stiff brushes are the best brushes. Some times I let a little paint dry in them so they'll be stiff.

I thought I made that up myself! Well, I learn something new, and am not surprised.

You're in very good company with your brush enhancing technique.

I had a couple of fan brushes that had the right feel as far as I was concerned. I believe you couldn't buy them that way if you had to. Just to make sure, I have one that's worn down past it's prime that I should cart around to the local art stores. I can't even find the type of brush it originally was, and it doesn't work to express it verbally, at least however I was doing it.
Unfortunately as well, the lettering that described who made the brush is worn away as well. There are stiffer brushes in the flats and angulars brushes, but not locally much variety in fan brushes.
