Heck, he had such long arms he couldn't help but through a great punch! His long arm reach was also the reason that you see him wearing his pistol so far back on his hip. That was the only way he could draw it and not wear some type of super custom holster that they wouldn't have been able to make back then.

Yeah I read a book about him my dad had years ago and it talked about that and a few other pieces of movie trivia about him. In most of his westerns where he carried a Winchester rifle it was the type with a modified lever bar because he had such large hands. Also since he was such a big guy to start with both in height and weight special care had to be taken with what type of horse he rode. After all they would film for hours at a time in the heat and finding a stout horse to tote him around and all of his cowboy gear that he was wearing too was a job all unto itself. Oh and you mentioned that famous punch of his, he did a lot of his own stunts back then as a lot of actors in that day did. In the book it talked about the "barroom-brawls" that happened in every movie at some point, he mentions that there were several times the people on the receiving end of that punch either went to the movie infirmary or the dentist because they zigged when they should have zagged!

Heck I wish my dad had kept it, but after he and I read it he sold it in a yard sale along with a stack of other western novels that he had. A week later he was looking for it and complaining to my mother about her letting him to sell it!

Yep! Oh I think this is the title and author of the book, John Wayne: The Man Behind The Myth By Michael Munn, I did a Google search and found several hits but this was the one that popped out at me.
