--- FA MULAN ---

SOURCE: Mulan (design owned by Disney).

MAIN INCARNATIONS: The Disney movie, and a sequel. They're both based on an ancient Chinese legend and poem called "Ballad of Mulan", where her name is alternatively "Hua Mulan". She also features in one of the games of Kingdom Hearts.

SPECIES: Human.
RESIDENCE: China.
OCCUPATION: Martial artist, soldier (while disguised as a man), and later a national heroine and icon of China.

PERSONALITY: She's brave, heroic, determined. She loves her family fiercely enough to go to battle just to protect them. She's very assertive, determined and adaptable.

LOOKS: She has this beautiful long black hair (before she cuts it, that is). She's a bit on the skinny side, but she's also cute.

IQ FACTOR: Very clever. Judging by what she does in the movie, she really comes across as a very smart gal. She not only successfully fools the Chinese army by posing as a man, she also saves the reminder of the troops by creating an avalanche, which means she usually thinks out of the box. Plus in the final battle against Shan Yu, she prefers to outsmart him rather than confront him directly (she knows she cannot defeat such a huge dude just by force). Let's face it, her brain is one of her biggest assets. Simple.

"BADASS" FACTOR: Self-sufficient. Mulan has had a military training and thus she's quite versed in the use of Chinese martial arts techniques and weaponry. In other words, she does know how to kick serious butt! And she does in the movie.

WHY I PICKED HER: Ok, maybe some might argue that she's not exactly pretty or hot, and maybe a bit "plain" looking (I even heard that some Chinese people complained that Disney made her the "least attractive" of all Disney female protagonists... I digress, though; I think she's pretty cute), but she's really charming and can be feminine, but can also be assertive and determined. Not only that, she goes through lots of risk just to save her father from (possibly) a certain death... and if that's not enough, she just happened to face a HUGE guy in combat, Shan Yu, and she defeats him, and she single-handedly saved China from the Hun invasion! Wow, that's quite an achievement! I think she really deserves to be part of any fictional female series, IMHO.

I really liked that movie for many reasons, but one of the biggest ones is that Mulan is pretty much the only (or at least on of the very few) Disney female protagonist who actually does something (well, she does a lot, actually). I think is good that some influential sources, like Disney, show characters that break gender roles.
