Description Edit: To see larger versions of the individual pictures, check my scraps.

I never quite know exactly what category to put my stuff under. Right now this is Fan art > Anthro > Digital > Games. I suppose this qualifies as game fan art because it's obviously a Sonic fan character. Half of the figures were colored traditionally and half were colored digitally, but as a whole it's probably more of a digital piece.

Short version: This is my main Sonic fan character, Door Into Summer the Echidna. These are several drawings of her done over the years, put side by side to show how she has changed.

Really long version:
Door Into Summer was created in the sixth grade when I drew a picture of Julie-Su and thought it would be keen to alter and re-color it into a new character and name her Summer. "Summer" was the name of a Pomeranian that used to wander onto the school playground, so that may have been where I got the name. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any drawings of her from back then. She looked fairly pudgy (because of my drawing style back then) and had a round, hedgehog-like face with rounder eyes. Instead of having many shorter, purple-tipped locks, she only had three coming out of her forehead. She wore white mittens with purple cuffs and a rainbow-striped shirt with a V-neck. Her boots were similar to Amy Rose's but had a red, white, and blue color scheme.
This version of Summer was childlike, happy-go-lucky, and frequently love struck. She was fourteen years old and loved to dance.
At one point, I renamed her Hokusai, after a famous Japanese artist. Eventually I decided that was dumb and started calling her Summer again.
My common internet alias at the time was "Door Into Summer," after the music track in the game "Knuckles Chaotix." When people mistakenly assumed that that was also the name of my character, I decided that it really should be her name. She went by D.I.S. for short.

Cut to 2000. She looks very different. My changing drawing style made her go from chubby to anorexic. I belonged to a small, close-knit Sonic forum back then, and one of the members planned to use everyone's fan characters in his comic. His redesign of Summer deliberately made her clothes look like a Final Fantasy knockoff. He also made Summer a twenty-four year-old gambler. The comic never got off the ground, but I liked many of his ideas for Summer and made them part of the "official" Summer.
By this time, Summer was more aggressive, self-centered, slightly nutty, and somewhat shady. She could side with either the bad guys or the good guys.

Cut to 2001. Not much has changed, although this Summer is more calm and confident. And still a hard-core gambler, judging by the aces in her hand.

2002: Summer begins to get a little more conservative. Her garment is a long coat instead of a weird bejeweled cape thing with short sleeves. Her shirt has a more conservative cut. You can't see it behind her hands, but it no longer exposes her belly. She's still a bit cocky, but also more self-conscious, judging from her slight blush.

2003: A return to a soft, cuddly, slightly chubby style, kind of like the earliest Summer. Her personality is more benign and less aggressive. I decided that twenty-four was too old and I made her in her late teens, like me.

2005
Summer finally gets a much more "no-nonsense" wardrobe. Her personality continued to get more modest and less flamboyant, and I wanted her clothes to reflect this. I added a choker for no reason other than I like chokers.
Her expression is kind of ambiguous. It could be interpreted as snooty, but she's supposed to look serious, like she's considering something.

2007
Similar to the 2005 design, but modified to more closely resemble what I actually wear, or at least what I would like to wear. I added glasses because I wear glasses and they add character to the design.
This Summer's personality is kind of a mishmash of the previous personalities. She's fairly flawed and still retains a bit of darkness and nuttiness under the surface, but she's a kinder soul with a shy streak.
Her name is still Door Into Summer, but it's usually shortened to "Summer" instead of "D.I.S." because it rolls off the tongue easier and has pleasant connotations. Her legal surname is "McKay" (the name of her adoptive family) but she also uses "Echidna" as a more generic surname.

Wow, I've seen a lot of Sonic the Hedgehog OC's, and most look quite crappy (and mine is one of them). But yours looks brilliant. I really like your OC, and how she's slowly improved.

I also like how you've shown how you've slowly developed her. The differences are somewhat subtle, but also quite noticeable when you look into it.

I read most of that and then scroll down and the first person I see is YOU!

I would want to do something like this for my own characters now that I've seen this, but I won't be doing that soon because I don't have enough years. This is 8 years, but I've only been drawing on dA half that long... although I DO have those childhood drawings I did of Todd when I was in the 6TH grade, so unlike this artist, my 6TH grade drawings aren't missing.

Lately I've started to get a feeling my story is changing, and if or as it does, I might "need" to make one of these one day.

It must be a small world if you managed to find me on this.

Yeah, I think you should do something like this for one of your own characters one day. That would look great.
Also, it says you've been on deviantART for six years, so that's still quite a long time. Mix that in with all of the much older drawings of Todd and the gang, and I'm sure you could make something quite spectacular. Still, a few more years couldn't hurt I suppose.

With how our conversations have been going, I think I understand what you mean by feeling as though your story is changing. It really does seem that way in places, especially with the plethora of new characters.

Also, it's odd that we're talking on someone else's artwork.

Heheh. I was talking like a lawyer when I said
but I've only been drawing on dA half that long...
I started drawing the oldest page of Todd VS The Monsters  in June of 2011. I basically had not drawn Todd in between then and, like, 1999... so I have the childhood comic, then scant drawings in between, then nothing until Todd VS The Monsters.
I'm one of the people who just made a dA account so they could do what having an account allowed you to do- like comment, fave and view Mature Flagged images. I just happened to see that it was an art site and force myself to come up with a name that pertained to me and art. Good thing I got that idea! Otherwise, I wonder what I would have done? Would I have drawn Todd at all?
June 2011 until now... not even 4 years yet quite... So yeah, not yet, but it'd be cool in the future. Needs more years to simmer.

Any place you leave a comment is a place I could be, and then our conversation could be on

Heeey, you got a character names Summer too

Thanks for showing your progress shots. It's always interesting to see how one's style evolves.

I first learned about your Summer a few years ago when a friend showed me this pic: [link] He mistook her for another “Summer the echidna” and identified her as such. I was relieved to find out later that she’s actually a hamster (crossed with something else?) and since then she’s probably become my favorite character of yours.

I also like progress shots—because they’re interesting, and because they also give me some hope if I feel down about my own abilities.

She's a hedgster/hamhog . . . whatever That's why the tips of her hair are lighter because that's how her dad's quills were. But she has a chubbier hamster build like her mother. This outdated pic doesn't show it too well.

Heheh, thanks. She actually started out as a run-of-the-mill hedgehog character, but I turned her into something else for originality's sake.

Thanks very much. I like seeing other people do them too, because I like seeing both the evolution of drawing style and the evolution of a character's personality.
I think I was inspired by this one here:

Where did the babysitter character come from? Is she one of your characters?

Thank you. I got good at drawing her because I did it so repeatedly. I’m not sure which is my favorite, but I’m leaning towards the most current one too, for similar reasons. In the future I might re-use a couple subtle elements from the 2005 design.

Golly Your a master at drawing this character no matter what year it was in.
This is truly spectacular, 2007 has to be my favourite, cause it looks the most casual.

I recall seeing this character of yours before, being drawn by another artist way back in my earlier RPing years. The 2000 form rings several bells, as I recall a "Summer Echidna" having been mentioned around the old TSF site I used to frequent. I sure remember those boots X3

It's interesting to watch people's characters evolve in the way they have over the years - I know it's definitely a milestone for some creators. For others it's a look back to say "wow, that's what I was back then?"

It seems I have yet another oldskooler to add to my ever-growing watchlist too...I think I'll be drawing you some fanart when I get some spare time

I’m trying to figure out how we could have crossed paths. I do remember hanging around TSF a lot, but I didn’t post art there and I only remember RPing there a few times, and not as Summer. It’s possible that I did use her and just forgot. My main internet “home” back in the day, and the most visible place for Summer, was a forum for the (now defunct) Sonic fan comic “Sonic Ideal.”
In any case, it’s pretty cool that you remember her/me after all these years.
When I look at the old designs for Summer (and some other characters) I do sometimes get a “What was I thinking?” feeling. Her clothes (including the infamous boots) were pretty bizarre. But back then I felt it was important for my character to NOT be/look like a normal person; I wanted something more and fantasy-like.
