I think people do climb it, but it is quite large if I remember rightly. Not much of a climber myself, but perhaps next time eh! lol

Perhaps...i'd just bought a 10 stop neutral density filter, so I was very much experimenting! But you could well be right!

Hia Noel, glad to see you've found the pic! It'll be great to see what you've come up with, from what was a fantastic evening to photograph. I'm already itching to get back down there, hopefully that will be sooner rather than later! When I do pop back, I'll probably concentrate on durdle door, and possibly even old harry rocks which will work great with my ND filter!!! So, next time I make my way to the dorset coast I'll mail you so that you can show me all the best vantage points!!! lol. Anyway welcome to the deviantart community and get showcasing your work

Hia Guy, glad you like it! It really was a case of being in the right place at the right time on this occasion! The tide wasn't quite as high as I would have liked it however; I would have preferred the sea to have been riding over the first step of rock to get a nice milky effect with the ND filter, but you can't win them all!

Definately make your way to it next time you're in the area though, I know it's a much photographed object, but it'll always be unique to the photographer and its always nice to have your very own version in your portfolio!!!

Hello again!

I used a 10-stop neutral density filter which gave me a 2min exposure resulting in several waves taking on that milky appearence your talking about on the first step. I had hoped the tide would be higher to give me a more pronounced effect, but alas on this occasion I had to work with what I was given - had I waited for a higher tide, I would have lost the beautiful lighting conditions and the magical quality of the scene!

On the second step, you're probably correct in assuming the white spots are salt deposits, either that or it's the natural weathered colour of the rock!?!

This was probably my most meticulously planned photoshoot to date! I'd been here the night before and took what I thought were wonderful images only to replay them back later and find that due to the suns rays hitting my lens/filter at a particular angle it shaded the right side of my images!

Lesson 1 - always use a lens hood where possible. lol.

On this night however, I got to this location 4hours before sunset to compose, re-compose and compose again to find the right composition, then shoot images to ensure sharp and back to front focusing, check camera settings, format memory card, calculate exposure times, etc etc etc. Quite anal really but well worth it - my favourite and questionably best photo!?!

To be honest with you, thats the one thing I don't like about photography - when you're concentrating so much on all of the above, you don't tend to fully appreciate the natural wonders presented to you - instead, the scene often takes on a sterile and diluted form where the digital capture takes precedence over the emotional awareness and response!

I am so glad for the time you took to explain to me what you used to get that beautiful silky look on this deviation... Maybe you will have a chance to get the tide on another occasion, but you did very well in not loosing the fantastic lighting that turned this photo so great!
Since we have no tide here, I keep forgetting about that magnificent event that you have there...

About the salty look, you will have to check out next time you are there! Who knows ?

I am stunned to read all your planning ! That is very, very professional and I see why you get such gorgeous shots. And I am so sorry about the shaded images... (not having a DSLR I know well what it is to see something fantastic on the display... and become very dissapointed when playing them in my computer...it's not fair!). What you say about the lens hood is also a good lesson for me. My camera has one, and I never use it. I should. It does no harm and it could avoid those light side effects.
I thank you for that and will remember it !

I am not sure if this is your best photo, because you have MANY that I like a lot (like the one with the tree and the rocks, and so many others).
But this is, for sure, a marvellous one. And it is a favorite, no doubt about that !!

My friend, if you had not been moved by the scene, you wouldn't have been able to take such a great photo. At some point, at some moment, you saw this as a normal human being (and not as a photographer) and it moved your soul. Otherwise, you wouldn't have selected this exact spot, nor would you have worked so hard to make it perfect!
I know, though, that WHILE you are shooting, you don't see anything but the display. And yes, at that moment, you focus only on shooting and not on the surrounding beauty. It happened to me and it always will.

But since you are aware of that, you will always be able to enjoy the scene afterwards. My major dissapointments have been being at a certain place, looking at a magnificent view... and not having my camera with me.
So, who knows ? Maybe our soul is condemned to photography, one way or another. If yes, because we do. If not, because we don't!

I am sure that now, when you look at this photo, you will at least remember the soft breeze on your skin and the emotion of getting everything ready for the utmost perfect result !

I agree. I love this, but there's something about that leaning rock that catches my attention. It makes me want to climb it as well as ask the question on how it was formed there in the first place.
