This is the very first picture taken with my new telescope. It is of the Orion Nebula (M42). I thought I would share it here as I would like to look back on it in a year or so and hopefully laugh at how bad it is. I know that there are lots of things wrong with this picture and I know I should take multiple shots and stack them. This was taken without Autoguiding, so there is tracking errors (My guidescope and autoguider only just arrived).

Telescope and Camera Info:
- 10 inch (25cm) F/4 Newtonian Reflector Telescope
- NEQ6 Pro mount
- Canon 1000D
While not used for this picture my full setup will include:
- Orion 80mm Shorttube Guidescope
- Synguider autoguider
- Baader Coma Corrector

It was as if dark matter opened itself to our view of light from the heavens we would otherwise never see. <3

Your too kind. It was just a single shot to test out my new telescope and mount before Orion set for me for a few months. As I said on your great photo of it- I can't wait to revisit this nebula, now that I am more comfortable with how to use all my new gear.

Thank you very much Mark It's a start. I now have all the bits for my astrophotography setup. I'm just waiting a week or so for the moon to be more favourable (ie. not there), and then the fun begins. Your request for Omega Centauri is one of the first on the list to be captured. Stay tuned.

If thats from a single exposure, it's bangin! Cant wait to attempt this myself, to early in the year to get a shot of M42 in the UK!

CapturingTheNight In reply to gdphotography [2011-05-13 20:34:31 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. Yep, single exposure. Because of the tracking errors I didn't feel like wasting a heap of time combining multiple frames, so I just spat this out as a future reference. Good luck and good weather to you, with your astrophotography

How's the NEQ6 handling the weight of the telescope, the camera and the guiding scope? The image is quite sharp. However, your ISO speed is to high. You should try to combine instead several pictures, thus reducing the ISO grain and increase contrast as well.

CapturingTheNight In reply to sicmentale [2011-05-13 20:30:47 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the honest feedback The mount handles the weight perfectly. I could even go up to a 10" Schmidt-Cassegrain with it. Because I didn't have my guide setup up in my possession and running for this test run the tracking wasn't perfect, hence the high ISO to get enough light over just 30 seconds so the stars didn't move to much. I do plan to take multiple shots and combine them when i'm fully up and running properly. Which I am now, but have had lousy weather.
