Description
With the signing of the Khitimor Accords in 2293, Starfleet began to decomission the Ulysses-Class vessles as they began to transition away from the use of dreadnoughts and battle crusiers. Admiral Pelia and Captain Mongomery Scott saw this as a oppertunity to utilize the superstructer as the basis for the Athena-Class - a more advanced version of this type of vessel. However, Starfleet Commander-in-Chief - Fleet Admiral William Russom and the rest of the Admiralty highly recoomended that the Athena-Class not be a replacment dreadnought, but a crusier designed for heavy deep space exploration as the Shangri La-Class had already drawn mutch scrutiny from the Klingon High Council.

The first ship to be retrofitted into an Athena-Class was the U.S.S. Odyssey (NCC-2275) at San Francicso Fleet Yards - Earth. After an exhausting twenty-month reconstruction, the U.S.S. Odyssey was launched from Earth Spacedock as part of the 325th Anniversary of the historic Apollo XIII launch in 2295. Later that year, the U.S.S. Odyssey transpoteted dishonorable discharged Admiral Cartwright and Lieutenant Valeris from Starfleet Security to the Jaros II stockades. In mid voyage, Cartwright excaped from his brig and attempted to steel the Captains' Yacht, only to be later incompassitated by Valeris' telepathic abilites which left him in a comatose state for the remainder of the mission.
