Description Yasukuni Shrine
Tokyo, Japan

One of the most important parts of the sumo bout process is the sprinkling of the salt in the ring.

The sumo wrestlers will grab a handful of salt and throw it out into the ring. Usually they repeat the process 2-3 times before the match begins.

"Once the actual bouts begin, the two rikishi spend several minutes before their match lifting their legs high in the air and stomping them down, a practice said to scare away any demons. They also throw several handfuls of salt into the ring, which is said to purify the ring. Many rikishi will also sprinkle salt around their bodies as a means of protecting them from injury." [link]

The lightingg conditions weren't the best, but I liked the series in general.

Glad you do too, James!

Sumo wrestling has always amused me. It was on every afternoon on tv, and if my brother wouuld get the remote before me... this is what I would be watching. Even so, the purifying ritual has always be something I'd enjoy. For the longest time, I thought it was rice they were throwing.

About the shot... nice focus on the sumo with the faces of audience watching him in the background. Just a great moment captured of him throwing out the salt, and being able to see it fly through the air. Lovely!

Well done!

I thought it was rice as well. But then once I saw the actual matches, I saw that it was salt.

Thanks
