Description A larger more detailed study of an earlier sketch. This one measures about 17" across by 8" high, mostly two pencils, a 6H and a 2H. Part of the "Infinite Village," the complete story of this village can be found in the description of the first sketch. I modified many of the towers and buildings on this version. Probably the most complex and detailed castle-village I've ever done. That's my New Years's Resolution! Pushing the limit, re-drawing good stuff and making it better. Hope you have a large wide-screen monitor!

Happy New Year and hope you have a prosperous and successful year.

Woah! This is beautiful. ♥ Architectural design is often so overlooked, despite its never aging beauty. Its hard to explain. Construction is timeless, you know? Like the German saying "society needs only three men; an engineer, an architect, and the remaining constructioners" (sort of weird in English ... but you get the point, yes?) More attention needs to be brought to this art, especially your beautiful work~ everything you design is absolutely amazing!

Yes, one reason why I love Germans and German ways of doing things. You'll never here someone say, "society needs only three men, a politician, a lawyer, and the rest of the voters."

(Also, out of all of your castle-villages, this is one of my favorites~ I really like the shape of it.)

How do you decide where the boundary between the contour drawing and the line drawing? Because it seems to start at the lower left-hand corner of the drawing, but that doesn't apply throughout the remaining border of the drawing.

Hmmm, good question, but not easy to answer. The broad circular "boundary" was created to give the impression that the whole site was a huge circle, and that the most ancient ruins there (10,000 yrs old or more) are part of a massive technical device of unknown origin, like a power generator. The homes in the foreground are built on the ruins of some kind of radiating "fins" arranged to point to the center. So I knew I wanted to suggest a huge circular site, but I also wanted some overgrowth and landscape elements, so the "border" or "contour" becomes the edge of the trees and waterfall on the left. That stuff is not planned, just happens later as I draw it. I think it's important to use negative space in a drawing, leave large areas "blank" to give the central theme a shape. Common error of many artists including good ones is to "fill up the page," which is too busy for the eye.

This is remarkable!
Is it on regular bond paper?
and 6H?! the hardest I've gone is 2H.
Thanks for sharing

It's on transparent vellum 11x17. I use hard leads to keep a super sharp point. Drawing is on the light side, then you use software to darken a bit.
