The barn was quiet that morning, so quiet Keri could have sworn she was the only one there when she walked in the door. That is until Zach turned the corner from being in the lounge and they ran directly into each other. Keri screamed, causing Zach to let out a surprised grunt in return.
"Oh my god. I thought I was the only one here." She held a hand over her heart before looking down. "Hey! I love those breeches!"
Zach ran a hand through his hair awkwardly, letting out a light-hearted laugh. "Emily picked them out."
"Course she did." Keri pushed past Zachary, opening up her tack locker and shuffling through it. "What brand?"
"Tailored."
"Oooh you lucky bastard." She pulled out a lunge whip, turning and poking him in the face with it. "Are you about to ride?"
He grabbed the lunge whip, pulling it away from his face, "Uh yeah. Prim is all tacked up.. could you help me with something?"
"If you promise to wear a helmet you crazy hipster." She yanked her lunge whip back, putting it in her locker again and closing it.
Zach rolled his eyes teasingly, a small grin on his face as he grabbed a helmet from his own locker then turned and headed for the cross-ties to get Primrose.
"I set it up about medium. You haven't jumped her since you broke your arm, I don't want you breaking it again." Keri yelled across the arena, finishing setting up the jump standard, then backing away, motioning that Zach could jump it now.
He cantered Primrose in a few tight circles, preparing her before cantering down the long side of the arena towards the jump. The mare raised her head up in excitement, her ears perking forward and her eyes lighting up. Her tail flicked with annoyance though as her rider suddenly pulled on the reins and jerked the mare to the side right before they got to the jump.
"What was that?" Keri raised her arms.
"I chickened out. She was ready but I wasn't." Zach sighed, trotting back down to the other end of the arena. "I can't do it. Lower the jump.. "
"Come on! It's tiny! Don't tell me you're scared."
Zach stopped Primrose, gazing directly at Keri. "I'm too rusty, I'm going to ruin her. She's a talented mare, her abilities far exceed mine at the moment I shouldn't be jumping her at this height until I'm back in shape."
"What? You are not going to ruin this mare! You are an amazing rider and even then one rusty ride can't mess her up forever."
"But-"
"ZACHARY ALEXANDER DE LUCA! Jump this standard RIGHT. NOW!" Being a mother, Keri had been able to perfect this demanding voice.
Zach gulped, cantering Primrose in a few circles once again before heading for the jump. Primrose was a little more hesitant to get excited for the jump this time, but once they had gotten within a few feet of it she threw up her head. There was no stopping her from getting over this standard. Zach exhaled slowly, gripping onto Prim's chestnut mane as he got himself into two-point. Her front legs lifted off the ground and her back legs boosted her into the air like a rocket. For what seemed like a long time, they were one being, flying. Prim had cleared the jump with plenty of room to spare. They landed with a quiet thud and Zach slowed her to a walk, heading over to Keri with a huge smile on his face.
"Well. You don't seem too rusty to me, and Prim doesn't look at all ruined." Keri teased, poking Zach in the leg when he stopped his horse next to her.
"Yeah yeah yeah. Guess I overreacted just a little." Zach leaned forward, patting the roan mare on the neck.
"You know, she cleared that jump by a mile. I think it's too easy for her, want me to raise it?" Keri grinned.
"Hell yeah! Lets do it!"
