Description
My notes for this illustration:
- Prometheus created man from clay, but Zeus did not permit Prometheus to give fire to man.
- Then Prometheus stole/retrieved fire from the gods to give to man.
- Zeus wanted to revenge/balance this act so he set Hephaestus to make Pandora from the earth, and Pandora would bring some trouble to man.
- Pandora was made a beautiful and cunning woman. She received a gift from each of the gods, and she was sent to Prometheus's brother to marry him.
- Zeus gave Pandora a jar (pithos) (which is called "Pandora's box" in modern times, but more accurately was a earthenware pot).
- The jar held a plague of evil spirits which Pandora would release onto mankind. And so she did, leaving only "hope" inside the jar.
- Pandora's story is often related to Eve. She was created by a god, she was the first woman, and her actions unleashed sin onto man.
- Pandora is regarded as "the first human woman" in Greek Mythology.
- Pandora is often portrayed with satyrs, who are indulgent pleasure seeking spirits.
- Thus I see Pandora as being a seductive and festive goddess/spirit who perpetuates the fiery heart of man, and natural spirit who was made from the earth.
