Description

This is the view of the interior of the ruined Cistercian abbey in Tintern in Wales, United Kingdom. This abbey was founded in 1131 and was only the second Cistercian monastery in the whole of Britain and the first one in Wales. In the medieval period Cistercian monks were often given abandoned or uncultivated land from secular benefactors so that they could make it fertile and profitable with their good knowledge of irrigation systems, water channels and mill constructions and industry. The types of land often offered to the monastic order included swamps, marshes or arid terrains and borderlands devastated by war. Tintern was one such marshy borderland located in the Welsh Marches between the kingdom of England and Wales. The Cistercian monks quickly transformed the once depopulated wetlands into a prosperous centre of agriculture and industry as well as religion and learning. Monasticism flourished here for more than 400 years until the abbey was destroyed and the monks expelled during the dissolution of monasteries when England cut its religious ties with Rome and the rest of Europe.  After that, Tintern was largely forgotten, becoming the abandoned land it once was. Even after they were gone however, the Cistercian managed to contribute to the beauty of this land. In the 18th C. the ruins of their monastery attracted the attention of Romantic travelers and artists, and eventually became famous as one of the most popular tourist locations in Wales. Thus, Tintern was transformed once again as one of the most picturesque countryside locations in Wales.

The way this church looks today has little to do with its medieval appearance, originally the nave was segregated by walls and screens which separated its different parts for the use of different groups of monks. These walls were demolished to make the church more attractive to visitors but you can still see their remaining fragments at the edges of the columns.  Some writers complain that the ruin resembles more a type of a fairytale Disneyland than a medieval abbey but I think that with a bit of good will, the modern beauty of Tintern Abbey can still be seen as a contribution of medieval monks who, after all, managed to transform this borderland location into a beautiful corner of Wales even after they were expelled from it during the Renaissance.

Whitby and Tintern are two, but I can never quite make my mind up about the third - Fountains or Rievaulx!

Wordsworth immortalized Tintern Abbey, of course.
The Cistercian Thomas Merton also helped legitimize a small part
of the oh-so-kind institution....

Apparently these abbeys and offices of the oh-so-kind institution
in the latter half of the 13th cent in England, were the
origin of a great deal of evil....

Thank you very much for the comment and I am very sorry for taking so long to reply! I am glad this caught your attention and it is interesting to see how diverse people's opinions about medieval abbeys and Catholicism are Thank you for sharing your thoughts and blames!

Apparently, scholars have known for nearly a century
about the roots of european antisemitism in the
abbeys and offices of the oh-so-kind enterprise
in the UK, in the late 11th cent onward...  Earlier in life
I was an admirer of much of the contemplative traditions
and practices, until as a graduate student (a century ago)
I read primary and secondary sources describing the
enterprise's management attitudes toward "heretics",
"witches", non-believers, Jews, etc etc...it all gave more
meaning to what has justly been called "the dark ages"....

I am glad you think so! Thank you! Tintern is such a beautiful place that in a good weather it is relatively easy to make a good photo there - even for an amateur like me. I really appreciate that this photo caught your attention - thank you for the comment and sorry for taking so long to reply (again)!

It is certainly worth checking out! If you ever decide to go there, check out Chepstow castle. It is very close and it is the oldest stone castle in Wales, it is beautifully situated on a rock above the river and still preserves some nice Norman arches and remains of frescoes. Thank you very much for taking your time to comment - I appreciate it!

You're welcome and thanks for the info. Both are a lot more accessible than I thought: our son lives close to the Severn Bridge, on the English side. It would take about 20 minutes to get there!! Something to bear in mind for a day out when we next visit.

Yes, I've been here. I just love the the grassy "carpet" and the fact that the structure is open to the sky. I feel much closer to heaven by having nature within these old walls. It's a stunning combination and you have captured it beautiful. Just love the little daisies in the lawn here.

I also like ruined abbeys though I cant escape the feeling how artificial their look is... its almost like visiting a film set They are obviously beautiful and it is great they can be preserved in this form - the grass in the central nave and aisles is indeed one of my favorite elements as well Did you get to see chepstow as well during your visit? Thank you for the comment. I really appreciate that you still visit my gallery sometimes Also, sorry for taking so long to respond, I recently moved flats and had little time for DA... but anyway thank you once again!

No problem on the delayed replies as I, myself have been rather under a work crunch. Two weeks of running a music camp with over 60 kids. I survived yet another one. No, I never got to Chepstow when I was at Tintern, but I did get to Salisbury, the ruins in Coventry, and up to Chester. This was all over twenty years ago. So it was really nice to see your photo of Tintern. HOpe the move went well and you are all settled in now!

When I lived in Durham I though I will never get to see Chepstow and Tintern but when I moved south I finally got the chance I only regret tat I did not get to visit northern wales with its beautiful castles... maybe in the future Thanks again and sorry for late response! How you have been doing for the last few weeks? Everything ok?

No problem! I have read Wordsworth's poem about this place many times so I really like seeing such a beautiful photograph of it accompanied by the history. My dad (a medieval religious historian) cares a lot about Cistercian abbeys, and I hadn't realised that this was one. More reason to go! And thanks, I've been doing pretty well--a little stressed but overall things are going well!

Also, I am very sorry for taking so long to reply - I recently moved flats and had little time for DA but I will try to catch up now I am very glad you like this photo - when I visit a popular tourist site I always feel anxious that I will not be able to make any decent photos because of either the weather, lack of talent or crowds of other tourists but Tintern was good to me - the weather was good and there were not tat many people there so even with my limited talent the photos are not bad - it is a beautiful place - very close to the chepstow castle and river.... Thank you once again - I appreciate that you still care to view my gallery sometimes

Hi Calimero! Thank you for taking your time to comment and I am sorry for taking so long to reply! I recently moved flats and became a bit detached from DA. Still, I am glad you like this and to be honest, most ruined abbeys in England look similar They can be vaguely classified between large, well preserved ones (like Whitby, Tintern, or Fountains, Rievaulx, Melrose), medium (like Egglestone, Finchale or Glastonbury) and small (Strata Florida or Lanercost). At least these are the ones that come to my mind though obviouly there are more (let me know if you know about some interesting ones ) . Thank you once again and I once again apologise for late reply!

This is amazing. The green grass "carpet" covered with all those daisies really gives it an ethereal mood. Funny really how an act of destruction could in fact create something so beautiful. Though I would have preferred if it remained intact...

Hi Akitku! Thank you for the comment and I am really sorry for taking so long to reply! Almost a month! I am glad you say you would prefer if the abbey would remain intact because I also thought so when I visited Tintern - the destruction of cloisters is an especially great loss, judging from the excavated pieces of tracery they must have looked amazing! Also, it is a shame about the broken stained glass windows... Still, it is a beautiful medieval ruin and I am glad you like the grass inside! It looked really cool, English grass seems somehow different from the continental grass Thank you again for commenting, I appreciate it!
