The day has finally arrived. Mira, relieved of her purple hair dye a dozen hours ago and fresh out of bed a few minutes past due, gobbles up the hearty breakfast her mother left in her room and put on her school outfit as quickly as someone in her condition could, a fact not helped by the necessity of concealing her visibly crippled lower body with pants and socks from its male variant.
Her hurried mother rushes upstairs to check on her daughter, only to find that once she was done putting on the pants she stopped herself short of putting on the socks, instead opting to sit on her bed with her legs held in a crossed position as she pensively stares down at the floor.
"Mira, what's wrong? Second thoughts already?", the mother inquires.
"Uh no mom...I mean...I'm willing to return to classes now but for how much longer I can do that 'till it all goes wrong again?", Mira stutters.
"Everything's gonna be fine, my dear!"
"It's been so long already...God, what did I get myself into?"
"We'll continue this conversation on the way to school, we're running late here! Put on your socks so I can carry you downstairs."
"Hm...Alright mom, one sec!"
Mira finally puts her socks on so her mother can proceed with carrying her on her back down to the living room.
"Ugh, I can tell you've put on quite a few pounds since the last time we did this! Seriously Mira, think of getting back into parasports sometime, it's gonna do wonders for your weight!"
"Yeaaah yeaaah whatever..."
As they carefully make their way downstairs, Mira mutters out aloud: "I can't believe you thought it was necessary to have my hair dye stripped. It was a limited run shade of purple and I don't have that many cans of it left!"
The mother asserts: "Mira, we went over this already! I checked with the school, to find that the dress rules changed quite a bit since you went for homeschooling. And with how vague some excerpts were, I didn't want to take any chances. At least your wheelchair, glasses and fingernails get to keep their wacky colors, so there is that."
"Mmhm..."
They finally make it to their destination.
"Okay, I'll put you here on the couch so I can get your chair from upstairs..."
"Wait, before you go!"
"Yes, Mira?"
"I thought Janis was gonna show up here."
"We'll pick her up along the way. I trust you two will be able to keep each other good company now that the hatchet is buried for the most part."
"Another thing, mom!"
"What now? We don't have much time!"
"Any news on that stair lift?"
"I'm still struggling to have someone set it up for us for some reason. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get your chair and finally get going."
"Alright!"
Many seconds later, the wheelchair is parked in just the right angle for Mira to transfer to, which she does while insisting that she won't need mommy dearest's help for that particular task.
"Okay sweetie, we're good to go now? Anything you forgot?"
"Yeah mom, I think I'm ready. For real this time."
"Good. Let me tell you what I told Janis back when she showed up that day, in case you still feel unsure of yourself: You are not the product of your circumstances."
"Maybe not but still..."
"Anyways, a coworker told me that she heard of something that might interest you...Something about a place where people who are, shall we say, in your situation can gather at and go on about what they're good at."
"Where?"
"It has yet to open though. When will it be up and running I don't know but I'll get back to you about it as soon as I hear anything new."
"I see, thanks!"
Before her mother could reply, the wall clock catches her eye. All they have now in terms of time is the seven minutes it normally takes them to drive to school.
"Wheel it to the car first. And make it quick, I'll follow right along."
"Aye aye, mom!"
