Description Mineral(s): Baryte (Barite) and some Malachite
Locality: Shangulowé Mine, Kambove District, Katanga, Democratic Republic of Congo (Zaïre)

Elegant, colorless sword-like blades of baryte/barite crystals on a bed of crystalline and massive green malachite.

Baryte is a common sulfate mineral that can come in many crystal forms and colors. Its main component is barium which the mineral is named after. It's known for being a dense and heavy mineral. More recently, the official name of the mineral changed the "i" into a "y" for some reason. I'm still not used to that spelling and have no clue why they've decided to change the spelling of the name.

Barite produces some wonderful crystals. I've always thought that they look far more water soluble than they are.
