Ko and the other Shinseiger come from Zelfare, a parallel universe where it’s inhabitants have the ability to control the elements. Ko and his family come from Hinoko. This nation thrives in metal works, such as blacksmithing and welding as well as coal mining. Ko’s father is the general of the imperial army of Hinoko and his older brother is captain under his father. Ko is adventurous and outgoing. He is easily distracted and lacks discipline, much to the chagrin of his father. He’s always getting himself into trouble and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. In the Council of Apalla, tensions between the officials were running high as the governor of Hinoko wanted his son to be chosen for Shinsei Red, but the council was leaning in favor of Ko’s brother. On the day the Council was electing the new team of Shinseiger, Ko was ordered by his father to stay on guard at the watchtower in case of anything going awry. Instead of staying at his position, Ko snuck into the Council meeting to watch his brother be elected, leaving Hinoko and the Council Hall vulnerable to the governor’s ambush. Not knowing what was going on outside, Ko watched from the shadows as his brother accepted the Shinsei Red power and position as leader of the team. In a fit of rage the governor and his son infiltrated the ceremony and attacked the Council. Killing Ko’s father and brother, the governor’s son went to take the Shinsei Red powers for himself but Ko stopped him, killing him in the process. Becoming the new Shinsei Red, Ko and the other rangers fought the governor and his followers off until they retreated to different dimension. Ko carries the burden and terrible secret of feeling like the whole situation is his fault. If he had stayed at his post, he would have been able to warn them about the ambush. With their homeworld destroyed, the rangers swear vengeance on the governor and chase him into the different dimension. As Shinsei Red, Ko has power over fire. When the rangers are given the Golden Weapons of ancient Zelfarean legend, Ko is given the Hisoken, a large kitana that channels fire. His mecha is the Shinsei Leon.
