One legend tells a story of Krishna assuming the form of kali ma when Radha’s husband hears of his wife’s dalliance with Krishna and rushes to confront her lover, but before he arrives Krishna transforms himself into Kali and instructs Radha to behave as if performing a puja. This deceived Radha’s husband and calms him down.

Another legend tells a story of Kali ma assuming the form of Krishna. Shiva asked Devi that he wanted to experience the love she had for him, he wanted to experience the feminine love. Devi agreed and said “I will take the Avatar of Krishna in Dwapar and you shall take the avatar as Radha. My brother, Hari, will take the avatar as Arjuna. Our love would establish the doctrine of spiritual love beyond senses and within.”
