Description Wait, did I just draw a real fish? Blimey...

This is a contest entry for 's contest to draw your favourite fish [link]

I just love the sturgeon, it's like a prehistoric fish stuck in the now, I made it look a bit fat with my carelessness but it doesn't look too bad. I based it on [link] so I guess it is actually an atlantic sturgeon.

Sorry about the sucky backround, I wanted the focus to be on the fish but I might improve it a bit tomorrow.

The reason I don't usually do real fish is that I always get the proportians wrong which doesn't really matter when you make up your own species, but I guess a bit of practise wold be good.

(anyone know if it's practice or practise? I should know..)

EDIT: I improved the backround a bit and added my signature which I keep forgetting...

Agh but with real fish I have to get proportions right and stuff, maybe one day but I like to keep my art low effort and relaxing as I get frustrated really easily.

1. Love the texture, it looks almost real.
2. Sturgeons are ossim.
3. The background doesn't suck, it's just a bit empty.
4. it is spelled "Practice". I think. I'm pretty sure, oh god, now I'M not sure.
5. My favorite prehistoric fish "stuck in the now" would probably be the coelocanth. That or some sort of shark.

Yeah, I do love the coelocanth too, just because it's so very different.

Looks awesome, I love the sturgeon as well, they have a real prehistoric feel to them like you said. The colours look really cool, and for some reason, I love how you did the tail

Practise >-><-<

Blimey! A fish that looks as real as something that died ages ago!

I did a journal entry clearing up the practise/practice debate

I know, aren't they just amazing fish

Cursico In reply to BlueKatfish [2010-06-06 12:49:15 +0000 UTC]

In your context, I'm sure it would've been practise. >-> I do get confused though- like between effect and affect. Practise is the doing, isn't it?

BlueKatfish In reply to Cursico [2010-06-06 12:52:58 +0000 UTC]

I did a journel entry about it

I still can't remember though...

I just like practise better, so I randomly remember it's doing And then there's only one other option.

haha!! i think its practice but both words exist! one is third person or somethin!! i never even knew!! haha!! but by the looks of things you definately dont need any!!!! this picture is absolutely brilliant!!!! well done!!!! a realistic creature looks really good!! and theres so much detail too!!! like around the eye! stuff you wouldnt normally have on your other seadragons!!! this is a defiante fav!!!

phoenixrising97 In reply to BlueKatfish [2010-06-06 16:18:26 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you when you said that it's better to draw charas your way, i mean creating one, rather than drawing an existing creature, but. . . And i know that this is not important for digital art, but on traditional, it's quite hard to draw the same character twice. For example, when i draw Zac, he tends to look different every time. . .

BlueKatfish In reply to phoenixrising97 [2010-06-07 16:24:34 +0000 UTC]

It is important for digital art if I wanted to draw something in a different pose or something, it would end up looking quite different with different prortions and stuff. Which is why I rarely draw any of my fish any more than once, anyway I have plenty of ideas for new sea creatures!
