Back in the day during the Japanese run, there were a lot of bizarre rumors surfaced that dictated how the series might go, with a particular rumor documenting Frontier's true antagonist "The Puppet Master".

Nobody really remembers the specifics, but I think the Puppet Master was said to be the one who secretly controlled Lucemon behind the curtain, so we decided to try bringing the concept into Zone.

In Zone, the true antagonist of sorts is Hikaru Fujiki, a sickly boy who never had a normal life for as long as he could remember. He was diagnosed with an illness that would forever have him hospitalized, and he began to grow envious of other kids who could live fun, normal lives. Being hooked up to digital hospital equipment, Hikaru's consciousness could somehow drift to and from the Digital World. Discovering Fractal Code, and how it could reshape the world, he began to hack into the Digital World. Noticing his meddling had side effects in the Real World, Hikaru plotted to reset EVERYTHING, in the hopes he could be a normal boy in a new world. His meddling and bottled up frustration stirred controversy among Human and Beast Type Digimon, starting the war that ravaged the Digital World until the benevolent Lucemon appeared. As Lucemon seemed to be the most powerful Digimon, Hikaru thought he could use Lucemon to start the reboot and so hacked into him. This created the evil Lucemon who sought to reshape the Digital World and terrorize Digimon, which in turn brought the Legendary Warriors (and by a extension, a lesser known group, the Ancient Magi) into being. Seeing the Warrior Ten as the most powerful over Lucemon, Hikaru sought to instead try hacking into them, but he was locked out of the Digital World by AncientWisemon who, well, wised up to what was going on.

Once Lucemon was sealed away, Hikaru gained access into the Digital World again and tried hacking Lucemon and the Ancients again. In doing so, he created the Ancient Spirits that Takuya and his friends would later inherit, as well as reactivating Lucemon. Finding Lucemon wasn't able to do much in his current state, Hikaru turned to the next strongest Digimon to push his reboot plan, Cherubimon, hacking into him to start collecting Fractal Code to reboot the Digital World. Lucemon, angry at Hikaru, counter hacked, having Cherubimon secretly filter data to him so he could revive and continue the reboot, but also to wipe Hikaru out in spite....

When Takuya and Dan's teams arrived and began to Spirit Evolve, Hikaru became interested in the idea, having not realized he could feasibly Digivolve. He later made his own D-Tector and Spirits, but still pursued his universal reset plan, sometimes Spirit Evolving and collecting data to speed up the process.
