Description
Updated picture of my baby, Steel Spirit.
He's a very big boy, standing taller than Big Mac, but not as big as trouble shoes.
He is missing his left front leg below the knee, due to complications at birth. But he doesn't let it keep him down. He invented his prosthetic, a light metal one that's charged with magic - letting it be much more agile and maneuverable than a typical peg leg would be. He's a pretty clever inventor and loves to tinker with things. His true love is helping ponies. He takes on all kinds of repair jobs. Broken windows, leaky roof, squeaky toys. No job too big or too small for this guy. He rarely accepts bits for his work, but rarely turns down a hot meal or a place to stay before he moves on to the next town. Steel is kind but he has poor self esteem. He doesn't stay in one place long. But he is easy to talk to and kind of an egg head and a goof ball if you're able to get past his thick shell.
Steel's constant companion is a tiny sparrow named Speck. Steel found him on one of his travels and nursed him back from death's door. He's often found perched on Steel's horn or nesting in his saddle bag. Speck is very protective of Steel and might dive bomb somepony if Speck thinks they're a threat.

Basics:
Name: Steel Spirit
Nickname/s: Steel
Age: Adult Stallion
Gender: Male
Race: Unicorn
Current Residence: Traveller. Steel likes to travel from place to place, so he doesn’t truly call anywhere home.
Job: General Mr. Fix-It! Steel likes to fix things and help ponies. He usually tends to barter for food or shelter and in return offers to fix things that ponies may need fixing; squeaking floorboards, leaky roofs, that sort of thing. He’s also something of an inventor- but he tends to be shy about the things he invents, hesitant to show them off even though most often they’re pretty amazing.
Theme Song:
Additional: Steel is missing his front left leg from the knee down due to complications with his birth. He wears a metal prosthetic of his own design. When he’s alone and thinks no one is watching he can often be seen tinkering with it. He often doesn’t take it off unless he has to.
~Physical~
Pelt Color: Light Brown
Mane/Tail Color and Style: Chestnut brown with some rust-colored streaks. Mane is short with a long forelock. Tail is cropped short. He also has a beard which he tries to keep short and trimmed. He wouldn’t admit it, but he’s very particular when it comes to his mane and tail and likes to keep it clean and well-groomed.
Eye Color: Forrest Green
Cutie Mark: A tan heart with a orange-handled screwdriver over it.
Physique: Very large. He has a barrel chest and his front legs are thicker than his back. He’s a very large draft-style pony. Much like Big Mac
Additional: Steel’s horn is short and stumpy. Sometimes it’s hard to notice due to his height and it’s somewhat obscured by his forelock. He also has tan stocking markings and a blaze marking on his face. Also, freckles.
Though impressive, his prosthetic causes him to be somewhat off-balance. He walks favoring his right side slightly.

Mother: Dancing Diamond. Steel’s mother was a slender and elegant unicorn that was part of the Canterlot Ballet. Though she was famous for her performances she was surprisingly humble. She was very kind and was known for her love of her fans. Her cutie mark was a large diamond next to a pair of ballet slippers.
Father: Bronze Bolt. Bolt was a very large earth pony who worked construction, born and raised in Fillydelphia. Bolt’s cutie mark is simply a large, copper-colored bolt.
Sibling(s): Steel’s mother died before she could have any other foals and his father never remarried.
Extended Family: Unknown
Closest Friends:
The closest thing Steel has ever had to a friend is Speck- a small sparrow. One day on his travels Steel found Speck on the side of the road. The poor thing was half dead- wounded by some animal. Steel’s soft heart wouldn’t let him leave the tiny thing there so he took it with him, nursing it back to health. Speck has since been his constant companion, often perching on the top of Steel’s horn or nesting in his saddle bag.
Marefriend/Coltfriend: Single
Husband/Wife: Single
Foal(s): None
~Personality~
Strengths:
Physical Strength. Though some would think that his physical handicaps would hold him back, Steel is incredibly strong which can come in handy in his line of work and his travels.
Intelligence. Steel is also very clever. He’s invented several tools and household items along his travels, including his own prosthetic. He loves to learn, mostly about mechanics and engineering. He’s been known to have several donated instruction manuals on him to read on his travels. They’re light, easy to pack, and according to him “fascinating.” He also tends to write notes in the margins on how designs could be improved.
Kindness: Often relying on the kindness of strangers himself, Steel tries to be patient and kind with anypony he comes across. He is unlikely to judge based on first impressions and is a very good companion when it comes to helping or just listening to a problem. Though, he’ll still do his best to help fix it.
Weaknesses:
Speed: Steel is pretty slow. It’s rare to see him at more than a walking speed unless his life (or someone else’s) is in danger and even then it takes a lot out of him.
Grace: Steel is fairly clumsy. He lacks a lot of elegance and has known to bump into walls and ponies – especially when distracted by interesting contraptions.
Self-Esteem: Steel has a very low sense of self-worth. Though he’s very friendly, he’s shy when it comes to his ideas, inventions and good qualities. All he can ever seem to focus on is the bad qualities in himself- either real or imagined. It makes him very easy to be taken advantage of and part of the reason he travels. No matter where he goes, he doesn’t feel like he belongs.
Magic: Though Steel is a unicorn he isn’t very skilled in magic. He can levitate things very well, which come in handy for his work, but he can’t do much more than that.
Likes:
Problem solving, helping, feeling useful, hearty meals, stories, baths, and warm summer nights.
Dislikes:
Being coddled or picked on, the rain, ice and snow, tight spaces, himself.
Fears:
Heights: Being the rather inelegant pony that he is, Steel doesn’t like to be up high. He’s fallen from rooftops and ladders enough times to know that he doesn’t do well off the ground. He’s more likely to walk miles out of his way than try and cross over a cliff or gorge as well.
Worthlessness: One thing that Steel can say about himself is that he is pretty good at helping other ponies. He fears being completely useless and thus worthless. He fears getting old or sick and basically just being a burden.
Drowning: Steel cannot swim. Though he can deal with ponds and shallow creeks he is very afraid of large rivers or oceans.
Bridges: Specifically old and disrepair bridges that look like they may collapse underneath him, specifically due to his fear of heights and drowning.
Judgment: Steel is pretty sensitive when it comes to his own ideas. Though he has lots of ideas for inventions that would likely be very useful, he rarely shows these things to other ponies for fear of judgment and rejection. He also tries to keep his prosthetic hidden, if possible. When in a new place, he quickly fears wearing out his welcome.
What are five things you'd find in their bag?: Tools, Oil, provisions, paper with quill and inkwells for taking notes or ideas as they come to him, and a grooming kit (he likes to keep his mane and beard trimmed and clean).
Hopes/Dreams: Though Steel is generally happy with his life, he one day hopes to settle someplace that he feels truly accepts him. He love to open up a repair shop and maybe even one day have something he’s never had- a loving family.
He sometimes wishes that he could have a better relationship with his father, but it’s more likely that he could grow a new leg than for his father to truly approve of him.
Overall Personality:
Steel is a very friendly and kind pony. He tries to always be patient and helpful, and rarely makes assumptions based on first impressions. Despite his friendly demeanor and large size, Steel is very sensitive. He has a hard time standing up for himself if ever picked on or bullied. He’s more likely to just remove himself from the pony than to pick a fight with them. If someone else is being bullied however, he’s quick to try to settle things- often with words than with violence. But he isn’t above using his large size to intimidate the other pony into backing off. Even so, Steel is always quick to forgive and forget and looks for the best in everypony.
When alone, Steel likes to tinker with ideas and inventions, carefully writing them down in his journal. He’s very hesitant to show that book to anyone. He’s incredibly humble and shy when it comes to himself and often will change the subject if the conversation lingers on him. It’s hard for him to accept praise or compliments. Often times, such kindness will go right over his head.
He’s very affectionate towards his little sparrow, Speck. He treats Speck no differently than he would any pony, always making sure Speck is comfortable and happy. If the two were ever starving he would hive his only crumb to that little bird. And Speck seems just as enamored with Steel as well. If he thinks no one can hear Steel can often be found humming along with the bird’s songs.
~Background~
Home Town/Land: Fillydelphia
History:
His father had traveled from his hometown of Fillydelphia to Canterlot for a job constructing a new theater. On the day he was supposed to go back home he met the famous ballet star, Dancing Diamond. Though no one could explain why this charming and elegant unicorn would ever fall for such a big gruff earth pony- it was love at first sight. For a while they shared a long-distance relationship until eventually Diamond agreed to retire from dancing and move to Fillydelphia with her love. They were married almost immediately and shortly thereafter Diamond was with foal.
However, the happiness was short lived. Diamond died shortly after giving birth to Steel. Though his father tried his best, he was always a bit cold towards his son. Whether due to the death of his wife, or the fact that Steel was born without his left leg- his father felt slight resentment towards this deformed colt.
Growing up, Steel's father was almost a bully to him. Acting very cold and often calling him names. It didn't stop Steel from trying to win his father's affection. Steel didn't have a lot of toys but he was allowed to play with his fathers discarded old tools. He had a bad habit of taking apart appliances, taking doors off the hinges, and once completely dismantling a wagon! He was just a curious kid who loved to find out how things worked. And, more often than not, he could put things back together again... after a few tries.
Steel was most happy at school where he was mostly accepted, three legs and all. But, he always felt a little left out when it came to field trips and games that required a lot of movement. His teachers tended to coddle him and make him sit these things out. Finally, after reading a thrilling book about pirate ponies, Steel had a great idea! He needed a peg leg! Just like the pirates in his book!
It took several attempts and lots of his father's scrap materials but finally Steel had made a working prosthetic leg for himself! It was a bit too tall and it was difficult to use at first but he quickly got the hang of it. He had expected this brilliant discovery to lead to his cutie mark, but alas, his flank remained bare.
His classmates however were very impressed at his cool new leg! After finding out he made it himself they asked if he could fix other things. Steel found himself spending his afternoon after school repairing toy trains, mending broken kites, and straightening out pogo sticks. After his last order was complete he felt so much satisfaction in helping his schoolmates and seeing the complete happiness on their faces when their old things were like new again. He beamed with pride and at that- his cutie mark appeared! A cream colored heart with a screwdriver on top of it, a symbol of his love of fixing things and helping others.
Steel grew up and was known as the go-to guy to have things fixed, but he was never able to impress his father. Steel eventually left home, taking odd jobs around Fillydelphia but felt like there was nothing in his hometown for him- and decided to set out to help other ponies and learn more about the world and the machines in it.
