Description And here's the elder sister to the more famous Matilda 2, the Matilda was born during a time where the concept of the medium tank was rather new and considered ridiculous at the time. In Britan, there was only two tank types; The fast light cruisers like the crusader, and the slow heavily armed infinity tanks. The Matilda 1 was born into the second of these categories with a painfully slow top speed of 8 mph, but the tank had 60mm of armor at the front to repel enemy anti-tank fire. However, the tank was armed with with either a classic .303 machine gun, or a 12.7 heavy machine gun, either way, she wasn't going to be fighting tanks while protecting soldiers...right?

Well, The Matida mk.1's first did battle during 1940 and were found lacking in their intended role, though they were invulnerable to German AT guns at the time, they couldn't effectively damage enemy tanks and the fact they were slow made them easy pickings for experienced German dive bombers. Most of the Matilda 1s were destroyed in France, covering the evacuation of Dunkirk. The few that had remained in England were used for trainers and nothing more.

Today, there are only three still around, Two are resorted and run. The final one is a gunnery target and a barely recognizable wreck.
