Description Some of you might remember this one from WIP Graveyard II. I loved the stage it had gotten to but didn't have the incentive to finish it so it got lumped with the other scrappy-dappy-doodles. The response to this one in particular was very unexpected so I decided to finish it for you guys. So if you commented about wanting to see this finished, it's dedicated to you.

It's also dedicated to those of you who watched me because of my trad stuff. I've neglected you guys of late, so hopefully this will make up for it.

BikerScout In reply to angelgaby [2006-09-11 09:16:27 +0000 UTC]

Cheers dude. Yeah, he's wearing a hat but it was a shot from an old issue of Vanity Fair. I think it was from around '93 so it could have been an Unforgiven promo shot. Nice detective work Mr 'Gaby.

And cheers for the !

This is stunning. I love the way you have picked up the details of his skin.

The details really do take my breath away amazing stuff

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to indigomoonshine [2006-09-11 09:06:34 +0000 UTC]

To be honest I don't spend long working on details - with the possible exception of the eyes. I tend to find that putting a few marks in the right place can suggest a lot more detail than is actually there.

And this is only A4 size. I sometimes wonder how long it would take to do something far larger - A3 or A2... and then I think... naaaaaahhh... Me likies me A4 too much.

indigomoonshine In reply to BikerScout [2006-09-11 09:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Hehehehehe yeah I get you with the larger stuff, I started a watercolour several months ago, it is 1 meter by 60 cm's and even though I aint got much left to do I just cannt bring myself to finish it.

Well considereing you say there is not so much detail it certainly fooled me the skin look amazing, and yeah I agree about taking your time with eyes, as they are the most expressive thing on a persons face.

Brilliant work hope you keep those graphites coming

Wolfjacobs In reply to ??? [2006-09-11 06:04:56 +0000 UTC]

Do you work on a grid system at all or strictly by eye???

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to Wolfjacobs [2006-09-11 09:00:06 +0000 UTC]

Personally - and this is strictly a personal opinion - I consider using a grid for pencil work to be cheating. I've never used one. Ever. Not even when I was learning to draw as a kid or in school. I pride myself on drawing by eye and spend the majority of my time sketching out, very lightly, the basic form before working the details.

If the proportions are out by the time I'm adding detail, it gets scrapped. You can see a few of the pieces that went wrong here and here including some info on why I haven't finished each one.

I'm a self-confessed perfectionist, so if it doesn't look exactly like them, I'm not happy with it.

BikerScout In reply to Wolfjacobs [2006-09-11 09:01:24 +0000 UTC]

It all comes with practice. Unfortunately, you need to start practicing very early. I'm told I started drawing as soon as I was able to pick up a pencil.

awesome likeness, great detail, but if you don't mind a little constructive crit, it looks to me that the white portion on the bottom right gives the impression that morgan has an insanely huge afro. do you see it?

Other than that throwing me off, the piece is really well done.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BikerScout In reply to Tedeebear11 [2006-09-10 20:30:46 +0000 UTC]

In the ref photo he's wearing a hat which is obviously where that curved edge comes from. Of course, now I'm picturing him with an afro. If anyone else mentions it, I might change it a little.

Glad you like the rest. And I always welcome crits - it's nice to get a completely honest response from time to time - cheers!
