Description The 442nd Infantry Regiment is the most decorated unit in the history of American warfare. It was also composed almost entirely of second-generation American soldiers of Japanese ancestry who fought in World War 2.

Most Japanese Americans who fought in the war were Nisei (second generation), born in the United States to immigrant parents.

Beginning in 1944, the regiment fought primarily in Europe during World War 2, in particular Italy, southern France, and Germany.

With the considerable success the unit had, a heavy price came with it.

The 4,000 men who initially came in April 1943 had to be replaced nearly 2.5 times.

In total about 14,000 men served, earning 9,486 purple hearts. The unit was awarded 8 Presidential Unit Citations and 21 of its members were awarded Medals of Honor.
