Description
Hesta Whitney Uzoma (born 11 November 1992) is an American academic and author.
Uzoma received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of California-Berkeley in 2015 and a Doctor of Philosophy from New York University in 2021 with a focus on gender studies. She rose to prominence in 2021 upon publishing an adapted version of her dissertation as her debut non-fiction book, Weight as Worth: A Historical Perspective on the Feminine Beauty Ideal.
Weight as Worth peaked at number two among nonfiction books on the New York Times bestseller list and received positive reviews from critics, with some describing it as “essential reading for every fourth-wave feminist.” The book also saw widespread online discussion across social media, resulting in the hashtag trend #TradOrRef (based on slang terms referencing the two predominant beauty standards presented in the book). Uzoma has expressed surprise at the magnitude of the book’s success, saying in a 2022 interview: “I’m glad that it’s become something of a cultural touchstone, but in retrospect there are some sections [of the book]- particularly in the latter portion- where my own personal philosophy bleeds through a bit too much… given that the goal was an objective historical perspective. From an academic viewpoint, if I’d known it would be this popular I probably would have changed a few things, but [from a personal viewpoint] I’m glad… it’s had this impact and moved the needle a bit more toward the reformist view [of the beauty ideal] for society at large.”
