Description ‘A sword is not there to hurt somebody, but to cut your own stupidity.’
(From ‘Ame Agaru’ (After the Rain) by Kurosawa Akira / Koizumi Takashi)

Well, the use of weapons is always a matter to be reflected carefully - not only for those who practise MA. More general the sword can stand for any kind of weapon, I think...

Was experimenting while checking out my new camera. For this shot I like how the focus is just on the filigree of ‘tsuba’ and a small part of the blade while leaving the entire object as a scheme…

For those who are interested: The ‘kanji’ letters on the calligraphy mean ‘wind of spring’ – a gentle, but continuously movement as a central principle of calmly facing (and embracing) an attack and letting burn out its deadly energy by not directly reacting on it…

Very nice lighting here. Nice composition as well. I would have liked to see more details of the sword itself, but that might not have been what you were going for. A very nice shot.

yeah, I'm glad to have it now. Seems as if it was right in time before the stocks were sold...
I'm glad you like this 'experiment' (or better: result of experimenting)

Ah! a real katana! Not the wooden bokens we use for practice... I had only a week's worth of training in Boken... i'm sure you'd wip my ass silly in a couple of seconds... ouch! Hahaha...

Wow, i've always wanted ot own the real thing...

It is Nostalgic, more than anything else...

Hahaha – I’ve no intention to whip your ass ‘Bokuto’ training is quite right – especially in partner practice.
Well, it's not life blade, just 'iai-to' (sword for Iaido practising). But you're right - it feels quite different from 'bokuto' (And therefore it’s currently one of the things occupying much time learing how to handle it...)
Guess I often tend to do too many things at the same time.

I like the lighting very much. I think the dof is great and the focusing cant get any better.
I'm glad you include very informative desc there, as usual Thanks for that.
I understand your intention emphasizing the 'tsuba' but IMHO the composition will be better if you could include the sword handle too.

That said, its a very good shot. Seems that you already mastered the new camera. Good job!

Thank you so much for stopping by again and for kind comment. You’re completely right about the handle. Thanks for that hint! To my shame – I didn’t really realize this… Well, it’s still a long way to go…
Hm, as for mastering the camera I've got an equal one but film camera, I just ‘upgraded’ to the ‘digital release’. So most of the handling principles apply as well. Still surprising is how it captures light/colours compared to slides/ colour prints.
Thanks again!

No problem at all. Its only a minor thing anyway. Above all you got the lighting, dof and focusing great - which are the most critical & challenging elements to get when taking shots.
It feels great to have a new camera isnt it? Did you use your existing lenses?

Berenice-V In reply to emeniux [2006-04-11 08:31:05 +0000 UTC]

Well, I really like it if people take time to consider and discuss a piece in detail Thanks for kind and encouraging words again!

Yeah, it really feels great with the new cam. And exactly: using the existing lenses, filters etc. was one reason to get this one.
