So in one of the translations of JFA, it says that Richard has 20/200 vision instead of 20/25 like in the US version.If you do some research, 20/200 is legally blind. Yes kids, Richard is blind o_0
And then all of a sudden it hits me.
LUKE IS HAVING STUFF STOLEN SO HE CAN SELL IT AND GET EYE SURGERY FOR HIS DARLING RICHARD.

I could see it more as maybe he's legally blind without his glasses (like I am). I like your idea. I could just see the story: the two fall in love in prison despite the clash of egos at first, Richard gets blinded by Matt Engarde (after pissing him off), which leads Luke (out of concern for Richard's saftey) plans some nasty revenge on Matt and using it as a chance to escape, and leads to an uncertain, but better future for the both of them.
