Description
1885, the year that saw the conclusion of the Berlin Conference; the swearing in of Grover Cleveland as the 21st US President; the Washington Memorial is dedicated by Cleveland's predecessor James G. Blaine; the outbreak of the Northwest Rebellion in western Canada; the escalation of the Bishopric Rebellion in Nubia; Charles Dow publishes the first edition of the Dow Jones Industrial Average; Gottlieb Daimler is granted a patent for his single cylinder, water-cooled engine design; the Rock Springs massacre occurs in Jefferson State, where Chinese miners are attacked by their American coworkers, killing 28, wounding 15, and forcing several hundred more out of Rock Springs; and, finally, the world's first skyscraper, the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, is completed.
Overall a quiet year, especially after the chaos of the Second American War that had ended just two years prior and most of the events that would ultimately lead to the Great War have not occurred yet, so the days go by and people the world over go about their daily business as they always have, even amidst the social and technological changes around them.
