Description
The Northern Common Wyvern(Draco aquilonis legiani) is a medium sized wyvern just a little larger that most flying wyverns. The wyvern only reaches a wingspan of 36 ft and a length of 16ft usually weighing from 350-500 lbs. Contrary to its name it is not a wyvern it is a dragon due to its flame sacs in the throat. This draconid is different though because it doesn't have a quadrupedal posture being more akin to theropods, While flying wyverns look closer to birds of prey. The main prey of the common wyvern consists of: bison, moose, young hadrosaurs, and smaller wyverns. When a young wyvern is born it is covered in a thick covering of downy feathers to keep them warm in the north, when the babies are born the parents tend to them, usually the male goes and hunts while the female deffends the nest and provides warmth for the babies.
The northern common wyverns are unique for having a coat of feathers that covers just the body as an adult. The main way they hunt their prey is by using their enlarged index talon and thumb to hold on to prey and leave a wound while biting the larger prey. When the wyvern bites its venom glands release an anticoagulant that makes it so prey will die of shock or organ failure allowing the wyvern an easy kill.
Habitat
The northern wyvern lives in the northern regions of Katan and Laveris. During the coldest months, the Katan population will move with the bison herd till spring, usually hunting them in the great plains along their migration. When in the great plains they deal with a much larger relative; this relative is the apex predator of the plains, the Great plains wyvern(Magnus Draco Camporum). When in the plains it has to be more of a secondary predator because the Great plains wyvern rules the plains and is larger being 30 ft long with a 60 ft wingspan weighing 800-900 lbs. When the spring starts the northern wyvern moves back up and looks for a mate. Usually living in the arctic circle rarely being seen farther than that but sometimes for migration to another continent or for fishing.
Morphology
The morphology of the northern wyvern includes. Their large talons and wings, the wings are split into three fingers that make up the wing and two claws on a hand. On their feet their talons have two larger ones being the index and back claws being almost 8 inches for the back and 10 for the index. Their main body is more compact than most dragons with a shorter neck by proportion. On their head they have two bony crests over their eyebrows that become more colorful for males in the breeding season and two backward horns on the back of their head as well as frills along their neck that are used as display structures in males.
When the young are born they have no real color being dark gray with black legs and a coat of white downy feathers to keep them warm. On the top they have black stripes along their gray feathers. During the breeding season the crests and frills on males start to become a more vibrant color (usually blue or purple depending on locale). Their main feather color and pattern is similar to snow leopards or showy owls.
