Description I came across this really strange yellow fungus this morning that was growing on a rotting stump, never seen one like it before.

And thus the alien spores have landed and built their first base camp.

It would seem that way.

If this had been a photograph taken in England, that would be a Cauliflower fungus, which is pretty damned tasty! I'm not sure if there are similar looking but poisonous fungi in the States though.

Stunning photo all the same

It could be that but I'm not willing to try it.
The next morning it was just a brown glob.

Thanks. According to SmoothEyes it's a slime mold.

I have seen it but usually just after a heavy rain in warm weather.

This shot was taken in April, may have been after a rain I don't remember, and is maybe 100 yards from the river. It can be damp there where it was and it probably was.

This is a lovely clear shot too. Thanks for showing it to me Gil. It looks like a flower, not a fungus.
I'll take it with me if I may.. Fav.

Thank you for the . I thought it was one of the strangest ones I had ever seen and a brilliant yellow, just like the photo. There was another one, not as pretty but almost as strange, that grew in my flower bed last year. Maybe you'll find this just as odd as I do.[link]

Aren't they fabulous? I shall have to go out and see what else I can find. Sure I won't come across anything quite so colourful, but you never know..
Oh, and you're welcome for the fav. It looked like a flower, and such a lovely colour...stunning.
