Real-life Chemistry Info for Comic 6:

First, a non-chemistry explanation:

Red Rover is a children's game where one team of people stand in a row and hold hands, and another team of people, standing far away on the opposite side of the field, also stand in a row and hold hands, and are facing the 1st team.  The 1st team calls out to the 2nd team, "Red Rover, Red Rover, send (name of person on 2nd team) right over!"  Then the person who was called out on the 2nd team runs as fast as they can towards any of the linked hands on the 1st team, trying to break through the linked hands.  If they're not able to break through the linked hands, then they have to join the 1st team and hold hands with them.  But if they are able to break through the linked hands, then they can take any member from the 1st team and bring them to join their 2nd team.

Then this whole scenario is done again with the 2nd team calling out to the 1st team, "Red Rover, Red Rover...", etc.  The two teams go back and forth like this until one team runs out of players.  The team that runs out of players loses, and the other team wins.

Alright, now for the chemistry info:

The HCN Molecule

HCN, or hydrogen cyanide, is a linear molecule, with a single bond between hydrogen and carbon, and a triple bond between carbon and nitrogen.  The molecule looks like this:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen…

A triple bond is much stronger than a single or double bond, which explains why, in the comic, the runners were unable to break through Carbon and Nitrogen's hands.

The Toxicity of HCN

Hydrogen cyanide is a colorless, extremely poisonous liquid.  It has a faint odor of bitter almonds.  Although there are many non-poisonous applications for HCN, HCN can also be used as a poison and chemical weapon (in either gas or liquid form).  A hydrogen cyanide concentration of 300 mg/m3 in air will kill a human within 10–60 minutes.  A hydrogen cyanide concentration of 3500 ppm (about 3200 mg/m3) will kill a human in about 1 minute.

The toxicity of HCN is caused by the cyanide ion (CN-) in the molecule.  The cyanide ion halts cellular respiration by acting as a non-competitive inhibitor for an enzyme in mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase.  Specifically, the cyanide ion binds to iron in the heme subunit in cytochromes, interrupting electron transfer.  If cyanide is inhaled it causes a coma with seizures, apnea, and cardiac arrest, with death following in a matter of seconds. At lower doses, loss of consciousness may be preceded by general weakness, giddiness, headaches, vertigo, confusion, and perceived difficulty in breathing. At the first stages of unconsciousness, breathing is often sufficient or even rapid, although the state of the victim progresses towards a deep coma, sometimes accompanied by pulmonary edema, and finally cardiac arrest.

This is why, in the comic, shortly after the runners touch Carbon and Nitrogen's hands (the cyanide ion part of HCN), they quickly get sick and die.

Oh quick slightly off topic question: What about elements named after scientists? Do they resemble them? And would that mean Mendeleev founded Atomic Acres?

Oh quick slightly off topic question: What about elements named after scientists? Do they resemble them?

No, they won't resemble them at all.  They will have their own unique looks.  For example, there's one element character I've made so far who's named after a scientist...Lawrencium.  But Lawrencium doesn't look like Ernest Lawrence at all.  Lawrencium has his own unique look.

And would that mean Mendeleev founded Atomic Acres?

No, my element characters created Atomic Acres themselves.  Most of my element characters have been around for billions of years before Mendeleev existed.  Mendeleev didn't create the elements...he just designed the modern periodic table.  But, heh-heh, it'd probably be an interesting storyline if my element characters invited Mendeleev to visit them in Atomic Acres.

Heh-heh, yes, certainly, a $100 prize wouldn't mean very much to the Precious Metals.

But actually, the reason I decided not to have Gold (nor Silver) play the game is that many cyanides (most often sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide) are very commonly used in gold and silver mining, and for the electroplating of those metals.  Using sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide during mining processes can produce hydrogen cyanide.  Because cyanides are very helpful in extracting gold and silver from ores, I didn't think that it would make any sense to portray any kind of cyanide as being poisonous to Gold or Silver.

Poor Silicon. In my Elementiverse, nobody would do that to Sigfrid! Well, I guess it was Silicon (And the other 10 challengers') choice to do it... so yeah.

I'm making a story about this too, but I will be using my element characters instead and the storyline will be a bit different.  Plot: Red Rover was part of the annual AtomLand Atomic Games that was led by Hydrogen. Carbon and Nitrogen get invited on stage, along with 13 more competitors. All 13 challengers die, and unknown to the other elements, they become ghosts lurking in the apartment. Hydrogen gets sued and gets sent to jail, while the other elements attend the funeral of the 13 dead challengers, but their ghosts show up. Will Carbon, Nitrogen and Oxygen manage to bring the others back to life without Hydrogen? Will the ghosts get revenge on their once faithful leader?

Cyanide may smell like Almonds (or is that the other way around?), but did you know that Cyanide can also be found in the seeds of apricots, apples and oranges? Luckily, a few apple or oranges seeds here or there won't kill you, but if you somehow sallow a whole apricot stone, you're going to have some problems...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BakerChemi In reply to Alexg47 [2014-11-22 22:16:13 +0000 UTC]

No, you got it correct the first time:  hydrogen cyanide smells like bitter almonds.

And yeah, I read about HCN in fruit seeds from Wikipedia.  Fruit seeds individually have very low amounts of HCN in them, so eating a few seeds won't do any harm to you.  I did write in my explanation above that there are many non-poisonous applications for HCN....I just didn't feel like listing all those applications in my explanation.

Thanks, glad you like it!
There are actually such chemicals as potassium cyanide and sodium cyanide....so because of that, I wasn't really sure if it would make any sense for Sodium or Potassium to participate in this Red Rover game.  I also didn't have precious metals Gold or Silver playing this game, either, because many cyanides are used in gold and silver mining.  So it wouldn't make sense for hydrogen cyanide to kill Gold or Silver.

Yay! a new comic! Too bad everybody died.......I'll get building some Element Recovery Centers(ERC). I'll need an XERC,BIRC,SIRC,and many more recovery centers. It's a good thing my elements can't die. And this was why I said your show was similar to BFDI. In one of the challenges, some of them were poisoned by poison bugs. (Builds a Xenon Recovery Center,Bismuth Recovery Center, and Silicon Recovery Center) If you don't know what a recovery center is,it's a device in BFDI that brings people back to life.

BakerChemi In reply to lololoooooo [2014-11-22 04:38:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh, okay.  Heh-heh, Recovery Center!
All the dead characters will be alive and well again by the next episode.   It's a very common gag you see in wacky cartoons.  Characters get maimed, blown up, killed, etc.....only to be completely fine and well again by the next scene or episode.  It's the same case for Periodic Table Chemikaze!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Alexg47 In reply to BakerChemi [2014-11-22 07:21:28 +0000 UTC]

OK... but the others seem so calm about it! And if their going to come back to life, what's the point of burying them?!

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

BakerChemi In reply to Alexg47 [2014-11-22 22:31:52 +0000 UTC]

LOL, don't over-analyze it.   It's just a silly cartoon!

Think of Looney Tunes, for example.  Many characters in that show have been blown-up, killed, fallen off cliffs, run over by vehicles, had heavy objects fall on them, etc....but then in the next scene or episode, they're all fine again.   It's just silly cartoon stuff.  PTC is the same way.
