I'm using Winsor and Newton Professional grade watercolors. Mostly the staining translucent color selection. I get the great color by painting multiple thin washes (layers) of them. Like to get a radiant gold color I will lay down a clean layer of lemon yellow and then when it is dry, Over that I'll carefully lay down a wash of burnt sienna and it will GLOW! It's how good watercolor is mixed, not in the pallete but on the paper in layers (Think of stained glass pieces laid over each other.

Thanks! It is on my list of things to upgrade when I am not quite so completely broke. Al though I rarely do a serious final piece with watercolors, I do love to try concepts out in WC and I enjoy playing with the medium just for fun. I have three sets (none pro grade) and really only like the solid cake/patty set, it travels so well and has zero clean up. Do you ever work with the cake type watercolors?

I would love to but money is always tight and seems to be getting tighter. So I have to use what I already have.

That's what kool about keeping a 'diary' of artwork in the gallery. One can see the transition of style and technique as time passes. I can even see it myself.
