Alice, Oz, and Gil walked down the dirt path. Alice wasn’t sure where the garden had ended and where the grassy fields started, but she noticed a heavy decrease in the amount of flora. Now, they approached a rather dark forest.“Is this really where a duchess lives?” Alice asked.
“Yes, but we’re going to stop somewhere first,” Oz answered with a sly smile.
“Where?”
“You’ll see.”
Alice sighed. She’d always been rather impatient.
Soon enough, they entered the forest. It was considerably darker under the tall trees. Wispy smoke curled through the air, but Alice could not see its source. For the first time, she noticed that Gil had been unusually quiet.
Suddenly Oz stopped walking and turned towards her. “Alice, you still have that bottle with you?”
She nodded.
“Drink it.”
“Why?” she asked.
“You have to visit the caterpillar. He has something important to tell you.”
“But who’s this caterpillar person? And why can’t you just tell me?”
“It’s not my place. Follow the smoke and you’ll find him.”
Sighing she took out the bottle. It was half empty. She carefully sipped it until Oz told her to stop. She was smaller than a blade of grass. Noticing that there was very little left in the bottle, she looked up to Oz and Gil and called, “What about you two?”
“You’ll have to go by yourself,” Oz replied. “We’ll wait here.”
Alice stole a glance at his face. His expression was serious, like when he had spoken with Gil. She gave a slight wave as she made her way through the grass, following the trail of smoke.
The smoke was getting thicker. Alice pushed away blades of grass. It was a rather difficult task, and as she sucked in a breath of air, she inhaled some smoke with it. She coughed loudly and roughly, trying to turn her head away from the smoke. Once she had recovered, she continued on her way. Before long, she stopped in front of a relatively large mushroom, for perched upon it was a man with dark red hair and sharp eyes, holding a fan made out of some kind of metal and smoking a giant hookah.
