Description Over here in Chinaville this is what they call a Christmas light. Sure they got "normal" lights, but you see more of these red lanterns around then anything else when Christmas rolls around. Now that Christmas is over however most of them have been taken down or stolen, for some reason these things make tempting targets for people to snatch. A few days ago on the news they were showing footage of a hidden camera at a large public square with many trees with red lanterns in them and people were walking by just taking them out of the trees without looking twice. Quite amusing.

On a little side note, people also have (plastic) Christmas trees here which they hang both the regular string lights and little red lanterns on. A sort of cross cultural combination that shows the influences of euro/western world.

fyi, everyone was confused when I put the presents under the tree.

Canon 30V, Canon 17-40 F4 L lens, Fuji ISO 400 film

If you wanna see some seriously weird color do this
get a low number fstop lens ... like 50mm 1.4
then set the camera to 1600 ISO, 1.4 fstop and about 1/1000 to 1/2000 shutter speed
you will be amazed by the crazyness captured

anyway

go into your 20d's menu
choose the color bracketing and messaround
you will be able to come up with some interesting colors ...
also you can mess with the perameters and choose to have your colors more contrasty and such

ofcorse shoot in RAW so youll be able to alter some of the setings in real time on your computer

believe me, the very first thing I did with my 20D was...ok, second thing (first thing was to check the firmware version) was to tweek the settings so it woudl saturate colors higher then typical canon camera settings. In fact I have filled all three custom perameters, 3 is for standard shooting, 2 is for low light, 1 is for landscapes

Hmmm. I just leave those on 2 or whatever the middle one is since I'm shooting RAW and I can mess with them through the RAW converter.
Its good stuff.
Are you shotting raw?
and what was the first thing you did then ?

V.v. gorgeous! I also think it's cute you put the presents under the tree and everyone was lost! I agree with sandcastle01 very much when she said
"I also love how much detail and effort you goto in describing the photos for us
it adds so much more than just looking at a picture will do...we are learning about the culture...
or how you are experimenting in a shot...really good and you deserve good feedback"
That sums up what I want to say perfectly! v. amazingly done!

Wonderful shot! I really like the perspective and the colors, especially the red against the dark backdrop. I also like the use of space. Hope you had a happy holiday!

you are seriously my god when it comes to your colour photography. You get the most amazing saturation and ... I can't even express how beautiful this is. Even without the shapes, the colour is magnificent. Favourite. Thank you for posting this.

heh, thanks, for color photography I have a very simple method I learned back when I was using a point and shoot digital camera. Underexposure makes colors more bold. Which in turn makes them more pronounced from neutral colors. Workd for me! I traditionaly always shoot at -1ev on my canon 30v, thats where I am more comfortable with the level of color vs details in bright areas and shadows

what film do you use? Cause as you know, I shoot digital, and I keep my camera set at -.7 almost all the time (unless it's truly necessary to change it) but I still don't get such amazing colours..

Very nice photo. I like the composition and the small depth of field making the background out of focus.
